Palo Alto’s Isabel Stewart (Canadian/American) melted hearts when she sang both Canadian and US anthems to a proud crowd at Canadian Heritage Night on Sharks ice last week. Isabel (along with her sister Beatrice) were kids when they used to sing at various DML Canada Day events, but seeing her on the ice as a young adult – and singing both anthems – was next level! 250+ Canadian hockey fans were treated to Montreal smoked meat sandwiches and poutine, Canadian beer, and the gift of a special edition toque during the pre-game reception hosted by the Moose organizers. And the Habs won!
If all this wasn’t heartwarming enough, read Canadian Consul General Rana Sarkar’s poignant post about his big moment at the game doing the ceremonial puck drop.
The DML Board is grateful to our sponsors, partners and community members who all came together to make this night so memorable and special. You can watch the videos of the anthem and puck drop (shared with us by the Sharks) – just keep scrolling.
Want to help us create some more DML fun?
The DML Canada Day Committee is forming now and will soon start planning the BEST kick-off to summer at Huddart Park on Saturday, July 1st! It’s the committee you’ve been waiting for. Please reach out to Chairmoose, Sarah Price if interested.

Chesterfield Chat
Future of Work: Attracting Talent in a Post-Pandemic World
Tuesday, March 14, 2023
6:30 – 9:00 pm
Morrison Foerster Law Firm, 755 Page Mill Rd., Palo Alto CA 94304
Who doesn’t love a Chesterfield Chat? Catch this panel next week as part of our Future of Work series.
As tech firms lay off workers and embrace flexible work-from-home options, tech firms and startups are re-evaluating plans for job growth and corporate locations. Opportunities persist to hire 3rd-country nationals pinched by the U.S.’s restrictive immigration policies; tech workers who’ve been laid off (including Canadians considering returning to Canada); and hiring / managing remote workers.
This panel discussion will gather senior policy and cross-border practitioners to discuss
trends from the view of British Columbia, Canada. The panelists will consider trends in
cross-border business planning and growth; how tech firms are leveraging cross-border
opportunities to optimize their talent strategies; and current cross-border tax and
immigration policies and considerations.
Panelists:
Honorable Brenda Bailey, B.C. Minister of Economic Development
Kathrine Richardson, Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, SJSU
Pavan Dhillon, Canadian Immigration Lawyer, Dhillon Immigration Law
Moderator:
David Stewart, Digital Moose Lounge Board Member & Past Chair

Colloquium: The Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Vote in a More Tolerant Canada
Wednesday, March 15, 2023
12:30 to 2:00 p.m.
223 Philosophy (previously Moses Hall), University of California – Berkeley
Speakers:Â
Dr. Eric Guntermann, John A. Sproul Research Fellow, Canadian Studies Program
Dr. Edana Beauvais, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Simon Fraser University
Research on the political preferences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) voters shows that they are more progressive than heterosexuals. However, few studies consider differences between heterosexual, gay/lesbian, and bisexual men and women. Furthermore, little is known about how these preferences have changed as society has become more accepting of diverse sexualities.
This presentation analyzes original research on Canadian LGB voters’ political preferences a decade and a half after same-sex marriage was legalized. Consistent with prior research, gay men, and, to a lesser extent, bisexual men, are more left-wing than heterosexual men. A more novel finding is that bisexual women are the most left-wing group. Lesbian women are only slightly to the left of heterosexual women. While left-wing bisexual women are growing in number, the overall gap between LGB and heterosexual voters has remained stable across generations, because marriage narrows some of the preference gaps.

More from Berkeley Canadian Studies…
The Los Angeles Times recently published an opinion piece by Canadian Studies Program director Irene Bloemraad titled “No, California Doesn’t Have a Population Crisis“. According to the Canadian Studies newsletter editor, “the piece addresses popular, but misdirected, narratives about an ‘exodus’ of out California. Many pundits have declared that the Golden State has lost its shine, soon be eclipsed by up-and-coming Sun Belt rivals like Texas. However, Bloemraad argues that these explanations don’t capture the whole story, and offers some solutions out of the Canadian policy handbook.”
