Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent a message that Canada will
not be browbeaten when he reasserted his position Aug. 23
that the country will act in its own best interests on the issues
of troops for Afghanistan and continental missile defence.
In 1864, John A. Macdonald, along with George Brown,
D’Arcy McGee and Alexander Galt, sailed to Charlottetown to
convince the maritime colonies to join Confederation. On board
was $13,000 worth of champagne to smooth negotiations.
