Have you joined the Tommy 10,000 Step Challenge?

An item from the folks formerly known as There But Not There.

Dear ,

From everybody at RBLI, we hope that you had a peaceful festive period, and a Happy New Year. We would like to pass on our best wishes to all of you and your families for 2021.

Did you know that you’ve helped do something AMAZING this Christmas?

For many veterans, a Christmas at home with their family is simply not possible. On Christmas Day, RBLI were able to give another four homeless veterans warmth, ongoing shelter, safety and a Christmas dinner.  By purchasing from our online store, you have directly funded the amazing support these veterans have received, and made a huge difference to their quality of life.

Our Veterans are Back!

Over the Festive Period, the Veterans who work so hard in creating and dispatching our amazing Tommy products took a well-earned rest. Now, they’re back, dispatching your orders and continuing their vital role in keeping Britain running through the Coronavirus pandemic.

We are Here for You

We know that the extended periods or isolation and social distancing can be hard on people’s mental health, often provoking feelings of isolation or loneliness. We want you, our loyal supporters, to know that we are still here for you and want to make sure everyone feels part of this incredible community, even when we can’t physically be together.

Whether you need support yourself, or would like to extend a hand to others, we have several online groups where you can find friends both locally and nationally. If you have joined the Tommy Club, you will find a thriving community of friends with daily interactions, or join the Tommy 10,000 Step challenge and your peers in the group will motivate you to get out the house everyday!

Recently in these groups, people have been sharing advice, activities, and even organising food deliveries or Zoom calls for those that need it.

Remember, you are never alone when you are part of the RBLI community.

Have you signed up for the Tommy 10,000 Step Challenge?

It’s not too late to sign up to the RBLI Tommy Step Challenge! Start any day in January, and complete 10,000 steps a day over 31 days. This totals 155 miles, which is the distance covered by our Tommies during the fighting retreat to Dunkirk in 1940.

Join an amazing, positive community who are all finding ways to squeeze in the 10,000 steps in good spirits.

All of those who sign up will receive daily diary updates, two videos per week from award-winning historian Neil Storey, and access to an amazing community Facebook group.

There are three different challenges available, depending on your level of ability:

The Corporal Challenge

10,000 steps per day, for 31 days

The Paratrooper/ Commando Challenge

10,000 steps per day, weighted, for 31 days

The Special Forces Challenge

310,000 steps as quickly as you can!

We’ve got a new Champion in our Club!

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

We have some BIG news. Our veterans have gained a new ambassador and he just so happens to be one of England’s best strikers…

Welcoming our new Tommy Club Ambassador

 Harry Kane MBE
Captain of the England Team and Tottenham Hotspur Striker

“I am thrilled to be a Tommy Club ambassador.

“RBLI have supported military veterans for more than 100 years and I know the great work they do employing ex-servicemen and women and helping them overcome significant challenges.

“I encourage people to get involved and support the Tommy Club as every new champion makes a difference. Together we can improve the lives on the nations heroes.”

JOIN HARRY IN THE TOMMY CLUB

We are all so excited that Harry Kane has joined our Founding President Lord Dannatt, the former head of the British Army, to help us take on the issues that face veterans today.

Every Tommy Club Champion helps to not only create meaningful employment or put a roof over someone’s head, but shows our nations heroes that our community is behind them every step of the way.

For Tim, who you may know very well by now from all his hard work leading the team that fulfills your Tommy orders, a football partnership at Christmas has an extra resonance.

He found in his great uncle Matt Denton’s war diary from three years after the fabled Christmas Truce.

“On Boxing Day he played football with 128 Siege Battery and the major played, apparently,” he said. “They lost 3-1.

“So he didn’t play football with the Germans on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, but they played a match themselves.”

He believes the Christmas Day truce still resonates today because it is “a story of forgiveness and coming together”.

And he believes it shows the power of sport to unite people.

He said: “Football is and always has been a common language between different nations and someone happened to have a ball, it overcame boundaries.

It’s just a shame it didn’t carry on longer.”

Tommy United

Harry Kane is now the proud owner of his very own Tommy United! If you haven’t already, you too can put one in your window.
Your order will be fulfilled by a veteran in the New Year.

You’ve helped keep us going this year

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

What a year it has been!

As a valued RBLI shop customer and supporter of our charity, you know that our veterans are kept very busy fulfilling and dispatching your Tommies. But do you know what else they have been up to in the midst of the coronavirus crisis?

Keeping Britain Running

Our factory employs more than 100 people – 70% of whom are veterans, have a disability or both. Recently, they have been busy producing thousands of wooden pallets to ensure that ventilators and sanitiser can be transported around the UK to those in need, as well as producing road and rail signage for crucial infrastructure projects. Many of the products and services provided by the team at Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company have been deemed essential work under the recent measures put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Managing Director of RBLI’s social enterprise Kate Bull says: “It’s amazing to think that many of our team, having served their country in the past, are doing it once again – at least in some small way.”
Whilst doing all of this essential work and support to help keep Britain running, the veterans have still been producing our range of Tommies, allowing the British public to show their support for the Armed Forces throughout the pandemic.
By purchasing products from our Tommy range, you have helped keep our veterans in work and supported the many other services we have across RBLI. Thank you.

Time for a Well- Earned Rest!

Having helped keep the country running through the pandemic, and working on thousands of Tommy products this year, it’s time for our veterans to have a well-earned rest!

Purchases from our online shop can still be made throughout the Christmas period and will be processed when our veterans are back on 4th January 2021.

The Christmas Truce

Neil Storey, award-winning social historian specialising in the study of the impact of war, is a Founding Patron of the Tommy Club. His videos have been educational and inspirational, proving valuable information. Tommy United is no exception as he tells us and the 1914 Christmas Truce. He has produced this amazing video for you, check it out!

Please do carry on supporting our amazing cause!

Our veterans may be taking a Christmas break, but they will be back in January to fulfill all orders from our shop, and help the country get through the pandemic.

A Heartwarming Tommy Tale

Everybody has a story behind their Tommy, whether it be a personal reminder of a relative, or a show of appreciation to all of those in the Armed Forces who have given so much to us.

This is no exception for Tommy owner Sarah Green, who’s Tommies serve as a tribute to her Grandfather Sid.

Sid, born in 1908, enlisted into the Royal Corps of Signals in 1926, before meeting his future wife, Maud.
In 1931, Sid was transferred to the Army Reserves as a Driver, where he stayed until he was discharged in February 1938. However, after WW2 broke out in 1939, Sid re-enlisted into the Royal Corps of Signals, and was posted on the border of Holland and Belgium. As a Sergeant, Sid was in charge of maintaining a fleet of vehicles, and was always sure to bring cigarettes back for the men when traveling over the border!
Sid’s wife, Maud was at home during the war, working as nurse, and attending scenes in an ambulance. On one particular occasion, she awoke in the night to go to the bathroom, only to narrowly avoid a concrete block that had come through the roof, through her bed, and through the floor after a V1 dropped nearby.
After the war, Sid and Maud enjoyed their lives to the fullest, with Sid attending annual reunions with his Army friends

Sarah keeps her three Tommies in her window as a reminder of her grandparents, and the amazing lives they had.

Want to see the difference your support is making? 👏

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

Hi, let’s look at the difference your support is making to our community in these uncertain times…

Community spirit has always been at the heart of RBLI. Our Village in Aylesford provides emergency housing, family homes, assisted living and nursing care to over 300 members of the Armed Forces community. This past month, at a time when residents could have felt isolated and alone, your support along with our partners has enabled us to provide a connection to their veteran community once again.

Here’s how…

Britain’s Bravest Bake Off!

Britain’s Bravest Bake Off – we delivered a baking box for every household on the village! Everyone was challenged to get their aprons on, channel their inner Mary Berry in the kitchen, and then to serve in a unique setting; perhaps a full high tea or even a teddy bear picnic! Included in the box was everything you need to make gingerbread, brownies, cupcakes and a loaf of bread.

It was the perfect safe yet fun activity done within social bubbles – plus a great way to keep the kids (and adults) occupied while it’s wet and windy!

A safe connection and games for all!

We have installed new digital rainbow tables in our care home! What are they you ask..?

40 inch activity screens with endless Apps (think giant iPads on wheels!). The screens have an internet connection and can be used to video call loved ones, as well as for individual or team games. Clinical apps developed for those with dementia are also installed.

You don’t need us to tell you what a difference this will make to the lives of our care home residents!
