So often in my position as Executive Director for Wreaths Across America, I am humbled by the dedication and thoughtfulness of our volunteers.

This week, I had the privilege of spending time with a group of managers from one of our large corporate sponsors. Some of them spoke about their involvement on the local level with such excitement and commitment for the mission that I found myself moved to tears.

They spoke of how their communities had come together to not only remember the fallen but to involve kids and teach them about local heroes. From a company perspective they shared how participation in a wreath ceremony leads to increased civic engagement, volunteerism and community involvement.

As I listened and watched them each raise their hand to tell their story of how they have incorporated the WAA mission in their daily lives, I kept thinking, these are wonderful people. I shouldn’t be surprised because my takeaway from almost any interaction in my workday is just that. For almost every story that is shared about a loved one remembered, there is a dedicated group or individual who is committed not only to that memory but to teaching our children about love, courage, commitment, and responsibility. These are attributes that our military embodies and as citizens ones we should emulate.

So, as it often is the case, this group inspired me to want to do more. All over the country, this year in 4,000+ participating locations, people who understand that our future, and our children’s future, depends on instilling a love of country, and freedom in the next generation. We do that as we tell the stories, place the wreaths and say the names, but even more importantly, we demonstrate good citizenship, kindness and collaboration for the greater good.

The kids are watching, and our WAA volunteers and community partners are setting a great example.

In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson established Hispanic Heritage Week to honor and celebrate the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Good guys versus bad guys: The nuance of history

If there is one truth about people and politics, it’s this: nothing is black and white.

Anthony Rota, the Speaker of the House Commons, and his colleagues learned a lesson in nuance recently when they lauded a 98-year-old man sitting in the visitors’ gallery as a “hero” of Ukraine. All parliamentarians—including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—gave the guest a standing ovation.

Trouble is, Yaroslav Hunka served in Nazi Germany’s 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division during the Second World War. Commonly known as the Galicia Division, its members have been accused of murdering civilians, including Jews and Polish Citizens.

Alouette I: A beacon of peace in space

Alongside the pioneering satellites Sputnik and Explorer 1, one uniquely Canadian contribution created an iconic trio in Earth’s orbit. Launched on Sept. 29, 1962, Alouette I was a small ionospheric observatory, which looked like an interplanetary disco ball hurtling 1,000 kilometres above the globe and got its name from a well-known French-Canadian children’s song.

Alouette I “was one of the most successful scientific satellites ever,” wrote Jack Rigley, vice-president of the Satellite Communications Research Branch at Communications Research Centre Canada.

From funding support programs to creating safe spaces where Veterans can share their experiences with one another, we work tirelessly to ensure Veterans and their families have access to the resources they need to thrive.
With the Poppy Campaign fast approaching, there will be countless ways you can give back to Canada’s Veterans. Whether you volunteer, donate to the Campaign or raise awareness about Veterans’ needs, there’s something everyone can contribute this fall.

How the Poppy Fund is changing lives for Veterans with PTSD
Since 2015, Brenda Boomhouer’s Vet to Vet has helped dozens of Veterans annually who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. Through weekends of camaraderie, fishing and healing, the project brings Veterans and their families together to share their experiences and discuss coping strategies with one another to help them feel less alone.
Originally funded through selling cookies, Vet to Vet is now fully funded by multiple Royal Canadian Legion Branches through the Poppy Campaign. Veterans who attend have no costs associated with attending, all their meals are free, lodging is free, they are provided with all the fishing rods, tackle, hats, t‑shirts, a welcome bag of goodies, and transportation is provided to those who need it.

Volunteer with the Legion’s Poppy Campaign!
The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign runs October 27 through November 11. Branches are gearing up to bring millions of Poppies to Canadians across the country. We invite and encourage all Legion members to help out with this most special time of the year.
There are many ways to volunteer, from distributing Poppies in your community, to helping coordinate Remembrance Day Ceremonies, and more. Reach out to your local Legion Branch to see how you can get involved!

Honour and remember Veterans through the Virtual Wall of Honour and Remembrance
As a way to honour and remember relatives and friends who have served Canada, Canadians are invited to submit a photograph of a deceased Veteran to be included in the Virtual Wall of Honour and Remembrance video. Photos submitted before October 20th will be included in the montage displayed on large video screens near the National War Memorial prior to the start of the 2023 National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa.

If things get busy, Della is ready to help. Cheryl did some gardening planting this year to spruce things up outside. I know there are many volunteers who are there to give a hand when needed; I may not know your names, but THANK YOU – you are appreciated. Many hands make light work and this all goes to support our Veterans. Thank you Branch 129 and keep up the good work.”
