This Canada Day, remember the sacrifices of the Newfoundland Regiment
For many, Canada Day is a day of celebration. However, in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is a solemn day of remembrance.
On July 1, 1916, 22 officers and 758 other ranks of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were directly involved in a frontal attack near the village of Beaumont‑Hamel, France during the First World War. Of these, all the officers and 658 other ranks became casualties. Less than 68 soldiers were available for roll call the next day.
Learn more about the Battle of Beaumont‑Hamel, and take a moment on July 1st to honour, thank and remember the sacrifices of the men of the Newfoundland Regiment.

Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships
Through the efforts of thousands of Legion volunteers, The Royal Canadian Legion has been organizing and coordinating the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships for 44 years in support of Canadian youth and our communities.
The world-class competition grew from Legionnaires’ support and promotion of youth sports as a healthy activity to help children whose fathers or mothers were serving abroad or had served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Today, the Legion Nationals has become the only premiere nationwide competition for U16 and U18 athletes.

Want to Participate in the Online Commemoration Day Service?

The Commemoration Day Virtual Service began during the first year of the pandemic.  Everything had been shut down, including all of the activities of Royal Canadian Legion US Branch #25.  When the closure began in March our members watched as the annual inspection of our local division of sea cadets cancelled. Then March became April, and then May – and the annual ANZAC Day events and our US Memorial Day service were both cancelled.  By June, the branch had cancelled its third monthly membership meetings, and planning to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations charter, which occurred in San Francisco, was postponed indefinitely.

Around that time a Canadian ex-pat organization called the Digital Moose Lounge contacted us to see if the branch wanted to participate in the virtual Canada Day celebration that they were planning.  One of our executive at the time was a native Newfoundlander, and we saw an opportunity.  As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are aware, in addition to being Canada Day, July 1st is also Memorial Day or Commemoration Day in the province – a day when we remember the tragic events of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel. To honour that tradition, and as a way to begin to engage both the members of our branch and our local cadets again, we sought to create a virtual sunrise service for Commemoration Day.

The tradition of this virtual service continues as a way to engage our members who are not local to the Bay Area.  Branch 25 is in the process of planning its annual Commemoration Day virtual service.  The virtual service will feature individual videos combined into a single virtual service.  As such, we are asking our members to submit three videos for inclusion in the service:

  • a video where you say “Lest we forget”
  • a video where you say “We will remember them”
  • a video where you say “Happy Canada Day”

You do not need special equipment to record these videos.  A cell phone or tablet video is fine.  We just ask that videos be taken in landscape format, not in portrait.

If possible, dress in their Legion uniform.  However, any formal attire is appropriate (e.g., what you might wear to a Remembrance Day service at your local cenotaph).

Videos can be uploaded to https://tinyurl.com/RCLcommemorationday2023

Ukraine dam breach exposes remains, refuse from 80-year-old battle

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

It was one of the biggest battles fought on the Second World War’s notoriously brutal and bloody Eastern Front and now, 80 years on, another war has literally brought the Battle of the Dnipro back from the dead.

On June 6, a series of late-night explosions brought down a section of the Russian-occupied Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River in Ukraine, emptying a reservoir the size of Utah’s Great Salt Lake and causing major flooding downstream in Kherson.

Honouring the crucial role of Indigenous Peoples in the War of 1812

STORY BY TOM MACGREGOR

The important role played by Indigenous warriors during the War of 1812, particularly the Mohawk, was commemorated with a monument in Kahnawake, south of Montreal, 10 years ago today, June 21, 2013.

Organized by Mohawk Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion, the unveiling was held on what was then called Aboriginal Day, now National Indigenous Peoples Day, and featured a Legion colour party, costumed dancers and First Nations singing.

A 907 km trek for homeless Veterans

The Legion’s National Headquarters is proud to release A Ruck to Remember, a video story highlighting the extensive hiking and fundraising journey taken by Legion civilian member and Ruck to Remember founder Lino DiJulio and Veterans Dave Ward and Joey DiMauro in support of the Legion’s Operation: Leave the Streets Behind program.

To date, Ruck to Remember has raised almost $800,000 in support of homeless Veterans. Their inspiring journey is proof that anyone – whether they are a civilian or Veteran – can make a difference for Canada’s military community. There are many ways, big and small, for all members to get involved at their Branch and work together to support Veterans.

Reminder: Commemoration Day Virtual Service – Saturday, 01 July 2023

While July 1st is Canada Day, for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians it is also Memorial Day or Commemoration Day – a day when we remember the tragic events of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel.  The first of July 1916 was the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, when 806 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment climbed out of their trenches and went “over the top” at 8:45am as part of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. In less than an hour, the regiment was devastated, most killed or wounded within the first 20 minutes of the battle. The next morning, only 68 soldiers answered the roll call. Commemoration Day was established in 1917, just one year later.
