Golden Bear RCAF Wing Memorabilia

We were recently contacted by the family of the late Bill Simpkinson. While Bill does not appear to have been a member of our branch, he was a leader for many years of theGoldenBear Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Wing. The family wanted to make sure some of the items that he had from his role with the Golden Bear Wing continued to be held by a Canadian veteran organization. Here are some of those items.

National Legion Week (September 17–23, 2023)

While some provincial commands and their branches have celebrated some form of Legion Week since the 1980s, earlier this year Dominion Command established an annual National Legion Week observance from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

National Legion Week is designed to educate visitors on the good work their local branch does in their community. It reinforces the important role branches play in our shared mission to serve and support our veterans, as well as contribute to the well-being of so many communities. It serves as a vehicle to drive new traffic to branches, attract new members and sign up new volunteers. This year, it can also include a salute to Royal Canadian Mounted Police veterans who celebrated the 150th anniversary (May 23).

National Legion Week will be held each September, with start and end dates that vary slightly from year to year. It kicks off on the third Sunday of the month in honour of Battle of Britain Day and wraps up on the following Saturday.  This year’s first annual national observance runs from Sunday, Sept. 17 to Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023.

As a US-based branch, we do not have a physical location like most Canadian branches.  However, we do undertake almost all of the other activities that would be traditionally associated with a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.  Throughout National Legion Week we will be posting items to this space to:

Jess Larochelle: A Canadian soldier

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

Wounded warrior Jess Larochelle, whose magnificent defence of a strongpoint in Afghanistan earned him Canada’s second-highest award for valour and spawned a campaign to upgrade it to a Victoria Cross, has died. He was 40.

“He was found in his shop and there wasn’t anything that could be done for him,” his brother Andrew wrote in a social media post from their home in Commanda Lake, Ont. “As per Jess’s wishes, there won’t be a funeral and services.

The bulldog bearer

STORY BY PAIGE JASMINE GILMAR

“The life of a stretcher-bearer during The Great War was a series of carries—mostly of the living, often of the dying,” staff sergeant John Heeg wrote to the Kansas University Medical Center. “[They] experienced life and death on static battlefields unlike any others in history.” And on Sept. 2, 1918, life and death was undoubtedly on Private John Francis Young’s mind.

The 25-year-old stretcher-bearer persevered amid the fury of German shelling and machine-gun fire, risking life and limb to save his comrades on the battlefield and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions. And 105 years later, Young is still remembered as the Canadian bearer with a bulldog spirit.
