Last of Russia’s Black Sea fleet leaves Crimean base

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

“Remember this day,” was the July 15, 2024, declaration from Ukrainian navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk. The last remaining warship of Russia’s vaunted Black Sea fleet left its base at the occupied Crimean port of Sevastopol, apparently ending a battered Russian navy presence in the region for the foreseeable future.

“From a pure maritime perspective, this is the last in a long list of humiliations suffered by the Black Sea Fleet since the 2022 invasion,” Tom Sharpe wrote for the London Telegraph.

With no navy to speak of, Ukrainian military have launched land-based missile and drone attacks, as well as sea drones, to great effect against maritime targets. Almost a third of Russia’s Black Sea fleet—27 of 80 vessels, including a submarine—is believed to have been sunk or disabled since Moscow’s forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The Last Canadian Victoria Cross?

STORY BY ALEX BOWERS

On Aug. 9, 1945, 27-year-old Lieutenant Robert (Hammy) Hampton Gray of Trail, B.C., piloting a British Royal Navy Corsair above Japanese waters, became Canada’s last Victoria Cross recipient—depending on one’s perspective.

Gray’s flight of eight fighters had been on a sortie near Onagawa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, when he spied a cluster of enemy naval vessels. Among them was the Etorofu-class destroyer escort Amakusa, two minesweepers, a training ship and submarine chasers. Gray targeted the 1,000-ton Amakusa.

Under a maelstrom of flak and tracer fire, he descended to within 12 metres (40 feet) of the waves and pressed home the attack.

Vancouver Police Pipe Band at Juno Beach for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

Earlier this year we made a donation to the Vancouver Police Pipe Band to allow them to be the only Canadian pipe band that was going to be at Juno Beach for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.  One of the things the pipe band did in our name was lay a wreath at Juno Beach.

The band documented their travels and performances on their Facebook page.

Following their travels, the band sent us a little thank you package (as you can see below).

Last weekend, WAA staff and the Columbia Falls, Maine, community welcomed nearly 200 volunteers, sponsors, partners, veterans, and Blue Star and Gold Star families to our 11th Annual Stem to Stone event. Over three very busy days, we shared laughter and tears and learned from each other’s experiences. I can tell you that I walked away with a renewed commitment to share with our millions of supporters, and I am so thankful to all who joined us in person and spirit!

In this month’s issue, you will read about some special individuals and organizations recognized for going above and beyond for the mission, such as the Veterans Heritage Site Foundation, which created the Great Smoky Mountain Veterans Gravesite Project to help identify and honor veterans who are buried throughout Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which spans five different counties between Tennessee and North Carolina. We also continue our Live with Purpose series this month, focusing on “Their Ambitions + Aspiration” and getting the first peek at next month’s new curriculum centered around the next attribute of a veteran’s wreath, “Their Optimism for America.”

This program and mission continue to grow because millions of individuals like those we met this weekend in Maine continue to “Find a Way to Serve” daily in their communities. Our volunteers’ time and commitment are key factors in our successful mission!

I personally want to thank all of you for your continued support. Your hands and hearts make a successful journey from Stem to Stone possible.

With gratitude,
Karen Worcester

Service in any capacity. That is what Michael Del Rosario, Army veteran and director at Walmart Private Fleet, strives for. Michael brings his ‘soldiers mentality’ to his position at Walmart – one of our longtime corporate partners – ensuring success and growth for himself and his team, especially for those returning to civilian life.
