🍁 He Lived Where You Live- A Community Postcard Campaign | 🍁 Il a vécu où vous vivez – campagne de cartes postales

We received this notice from the Juno Beach Centre earlier this week.  It seems that the folks at the Centre looked up the home addresses of all of the Canadians who died between July 1944 and May 1945 and, if the home still existed, they sent a postcard that address telling the current resident about the soldier who once lived there and died fighting for their freedom.  It seems in the end there were roughly 2000 that ended up being sent out.  Read more about it below, including an example of one of the postcards and an interactive map showing where all ~2000 postcards were sent.

We thought that members might find these stories interesting…

We sent 1,945 Canadians a postcard
Over the course of the war, nearly 45,000 Canadians gave their lives in the fight for a better world. After the success of D-Day, the Canadian Army joined in the pursuit and fought through Belgium and liberated the Netherlands before striking into Germany; their victory was achieved with the support of the Royal Canadian Air Force and enabled by the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Merchant Navy. May 8, 2025 marks 80 years since the end of the war in Europe.

To mark this important anniversary of VE Day, the Juno Beach Centre embarked on a research project to keep the names and memory of these individuals alive. By cross referencing the home addresses of those Canadians who perished between July 1944 and May 1945 with contemporary addresses, we found nearly 2,000 that still exist today.

This week, 1,945 individual addresses in Canada were mailed a unique postcard that shares the name and story of someone who joined the Canadian military who lived there at the time of his enlistment.

One of the postcards will be sent to the home of Corporal Gerald Austin Ellis.

Gerald Ellis was born on March 3, 1921 in Digby, Nova Scotia. For 2.5 years before enlisting in Halifax, Gerald had been employed as a machinist at Trenton Industries in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He was single when he enlisted but he married Sylvia O’Brien a little over a month after enlisting.

Gerald sailed from Halifax to the UK on August 4, 1944 and landed in Europe on September 4, one month after leaving Canada. Corporal Ellis was Killed in Action on February 27, 1945 in the Netherlands.

Originally interred in a temporary grave near where he fell, his body was re-interred in Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Netherlands in 1946. His wife Sylvia, received a letter, dated July 12, 1946, informing her of the reburial and she was assured that the grave “will receive care and maintenance in perpetuity.”

We will remember Corporal Ellis, and the nearly 45,000 Canadians who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and democracy 80 years ago.

Chinese fighters take up positions alongside Russians in Ukraine

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

Ukrainian intelligence documents indicate at least 163 Chinese nationals have been fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says there are likely more.

The Kyiv Independent newspaper reviewed two documents, including one with photos, passport details and other information on 155 Chinese fighters. Another document detailed 13 Chinese recruits selected for service in the Russian army as of April 2, 2025.

U.S. intelligence sources told Reuters the fighters are mercenaries who don’t appear to have a direct link to China’s government. Beijing has always denied any direct Chinese involvement in the war since Russian forces invaded in February 2022.

RCAF Foundation launches children’s book on aviation

STORY BY ALEX BOWERS

“It seems like in the environment we’re in currently,” says the RCAF Foundation’s founding CEO, Jeremy Diamond, “it is even more important to make sure that we understand our stories, our background, our origins, and be proud of what we’ve done, while equally providing a space to be critical and introspective about some of the things we’ve done and achieved throughout our shared history as a nation.”

This is exactly what the RCAF Foundation itself strives for, established in 2021 to “recognize, foster and celebrate the Royal Canadian Air Force through community engagement, education programs and commemorative activities.” It began with a focus on marking the air force’s centenary in 2024. Nevertheless, Diamond’s hopes for the organization stretch well into the future.
