ANZAC Day 2021 and more

A reminder from one of our partners for an up-coming virtual service (and several other items in their monthly newsletter).

Kia Ora MichaelWe are all thankfully making that glorious slow return to our typical outdoor  community lifestyles, and SF Kiwis is excited that we may soon all be meeting again in person, with safety first and foremost, of course.

We want to hear from you!

SFKiwis is very interested to hear what you look forward to from this uniquely Kiwi organization in the coming months  – you will receive a Survey Monkey soon, and we are hoping for new suggestions from our members, to keep our unique group vibrant and relevant for those of us who are temporarily or permanently calling the Bay Area “home”.

We also welcome you to be part of our brainstorming sessions. If a stint on the Board of our very own San Francisco SFKiwis organization sounds like your cup of tea, please drop us a line at info@sfkiwis.com and we’d love to chat about it.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Survey, and information down the road about a NZ Christmas Party, a Picnic, a Camp Out, Pub Nights and a visit to the NZ section of the wonderful Golden Gate Park Botanical Gardens.

Be well, Kia Kaha

From your friendly SFKiwis Board members

We are seeking your help to create a special video for ANZAC Day

Our branch is taking a leading role with the Australian American Chamber of Commerce SF and the SF Kiwis – New Zealand American Association San Francisco in organizing this event – both the video that will be available in advance and the live event.

The Royal Canadian Legion encourages all members in the San Francisco Bay Area to attend this event.  For those that are unaware, ANZAC Day is celebrated on the anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli.  While the main Allied combatants were from Australia and New Zealand, there was a British contingent there in the form of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.  This was some ~35 years before Newfoundland would join Canada.  For more information about the role of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at Gallipoli, visit:

INK IN THE LINES EXHIBITION

Many members and veterans of the Australian Defence Forces have tattoos, and while their reasons for getting tattooed are as varied as the people themselves, self-expression and belonging play a part.
They also share a common purpose in getting inked: to remember.
Inscribed on skin are their identities as veterans, the commemoration of loss, experiences of trauma and overcoming adversity, the bonds of family and friends, and acknowledging the experiences that make us who we are.
The Ink in the Lines exhibition is on display until 16 May 2021

THANK YOU NEW ZEALAND
What an incredible show of national spirit on display!
Anzac Day 2020 will be remembered as one of New Zealand’s most memorable days in recent history – with the whole country rallying together to Stand At Dawn. Although we all needed to distance ourselves from one another under lockdown rules, there was a national sense of unity as we remembered and honoured our veterans and service personnel – those who came home and those who did not.
Leading up to the day, we witnessed families decorate homes, letterboxes, gardens, and even vehicles with poppies, flags, and remembrance themes. Kiwis were learning about their family’s military history, creating poems, music, and even a few paintings too. It was an Anzac Day like no other. And we couldn’t have done it without you.

So, Thank you for coming along with us to help make Anzac Day 2020 a unique and very special event.

OUR WORK IS NEVER DONE

For the RNZRSA and the RSA Support Network, we still have some challenging times ahead. The uncertainty of the Covid-19 situation has left us with much to do. The work that the RSA does every day to support our veteran community continues – and right now, this is needed more than ever. The reality is that veterans and service personnel of all ages require support and care. With the changing nature of conflict, the demand for mental health programs, career transition services, and family assistance initiatives has meant that pressure on the RSA’s services is high as ever.

We need everyone’s assistance to ensure that we as a society look after all of those who have selflessly given us their service. The Royal New Zealand Returned & Services’ Association is a registered charity and not-for-profit dedicated to caring for all those impacted by military service for New Zealand, remembering and honouring those who have served and advocating for the rights of our veterans and service personnel.

A tribute to all New Zealanders who stood at dawn. Anzac day 2020
