MORE

While the first day of July is a celebration in most of Canada, for Newfoundland and Labrador it is also a day for sombre remembrance as it is also Commemoration Day (also known as Memorial Day), when we remember the tragically destructive events of July 1st, 1916.

It is the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, when 806 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment climbed out of their trenches and went “over the top” at 8:45am as part of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. In less than an hour, the regiment was devastated, most killed or wounded within the first 20 minutes of the battle. The next morning, only 68 soldiers answered roll call. Commemoration Day was established in 1917, just one year later.

After Confederation with Canada, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador continued the tradition of Commemoration Day during the morning of July 1st, and reserved the remainder of the day to celebrate Canada Day.

The ~45 minutes service will be broadcast on Zoom.

RSVP here for live sunrise ceremony at 6am PST.

RSVP here for replay at 10am PST.

🍁 Canada Day at Your House: a Virtual Celebration 🍁

With the support of the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles,  will unite to host the official Canada Day for Southern California on Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, at 6:00 pm PST.

Given the current circumstances and government rules and restrictions surrounding COVID-19, we have decided to make this a free and virtual event. It will be streamed live for everyone to enjoy from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Canadians of all ages living in Southern California and beyond are invited to join.

Plus, scroll down for exciting discounts from Canadian owned businesses offering great food and drink specials to enjoy on the day!

June 24: SF Pride Parade 2018 – Friends of Canada and Mexico March (San Francisco)

Hosted By: Canadian and Mexican Consulates

—————

Dear Canadians and Friends of Canada,

Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed that no matter who we love or how we identify, all of us deserve to feel safe and secure, live free from discrimination and persecution, and express ourselves fully.

We must continue to fight against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia, and to defend gender expression, gender identity and sexual orientation rights.  I am personally committed to fight hatred, honour love, and defend human rights for all.

It is in this spirit that I would like to invite you to join me to march together in the  San Francisco Pride parade on Sunday June 24th.

Please note the link here for the invitation/RSVP.  Please forward to your Canadian friends!

https://sfpride2018canadamexico.eventbrite.com

The march will begin around 11:00am, at the Embarcadero, and will end at San Francisco City Hall, at around 14:00.  Please join me, and together, we can build a world where all of us are free to be who we are and love who we love.

Dress comfortably, colourfully, bring your friends, family, your dogs…and your bottle of water.  The exact departure point will be communicated very soon – look for Canadian rainbow flags.

For the first time this year, we will be joining the Mexican Consulate as a demonstration of North American solidarity!

Looking forward to meeting you!
