Register now for Walking our War Graves: Normandy

Members might be interested in taking part in this fitness fundraiser for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Registration is now open for Walking Our War Graves: Normandy.

Thanks to people like you, the last virtual walk we organised, in aid of The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, was a huge success. Therefore, we have decided to create another, but this time in Normandy.

Here’s all you need to know about taking part:

From 25th April – 27th May, the virtual 95km route will start at Ranville War Cemetery and cover the distance between Commission cemeteries that commemorate those who died in the Normandy region during the Second World War.

Complete the distance any way you would like, and from anywhere in the world.

It costs just £25 to enter and you can set your own fundraising target.

Find out more and take part
Taking part in this challenge will help the CWGF support more key initiatives like our RAF Cadets research project to our first public engagement event in Nairobi, Kenya which saw local students visit Kariokor Cemetery to discover the Second World War casualties buried there.

Together we can keep their stories alive.

International Women’s Day • Appeal for Relatives • Recent Rededication Ceremonies • Join the CWGF Walking Challenge

There are many stories of women from across the Commonwealth who fought during both World Wars, some of whom laid down their lives and are commemorated by the CWGC today. Here in the UK you don’t have to travel far to discover these inspirational stories.

So, who are these women, where did they come from and what did they do during the wars? We’ve picked out some of these amazing stories from both conflicts which might be closer to home than you think.

You can discover more about these inspirational women on the CWGC website.

Appeal for RelativesAn appeal for relatives is a search to locate the next of kin for soldiers who fell in war. Could you be connected to any individuals who died in the World Wars?

We wish to make contact with direct blood relations of the casualties concerned.

If you are related to one of the casualties in our news article and can provide us with the documentation, please contact our Enquiries Team.

Rededications across BelgiumOn Tuesday 8 March, the graves of Sapper Stanley Evelyn Barnden of 17th Field Company Royal Engineers, Lance Corporal Owen James Munday and Private Leonard George Holiday, both of 15th (Hampshire Yeomanry) Battalion The Hampshire Regiment, were rededicated more than a hundred years after they died.

The services were held at the CWGC’s Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Heestert Military Cemetery and Vichte Military Cemetery, all in Belgium.

Durban Stellawood Storm Repairs • A different kind of Valentine • European visitor centres reopened • Join the CWGF

Our work to restore Durban Stellawood Cemetery following storm damage has been completed by our team in South Africa. The team used the opportunity to make several important conservation and changes to the site. They used their specialist knowledge of Horticulture to implement a sustainable planting scheme full of indigenous plant and tree species appropriate for the local climate at Durban.

The works also included the installation of a borehole water supply and water irrigation system.

This, in combination with a drought resistant, indigenous horticultural planting scheme, will provide a sustainable, self sufficient water supply that will reduce the use of local municipality potable water, a precious resource for the local area.
