Story by Sharon Adams

The Newfoundland Regiment got its first taste of trench warfare not in France or Belgium but at Suvla Bay on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where it joined a British army brigade on Sept. 20, 1915.

For months, the British and troops from Australia and New Zealand had fought to take control of the Dardanelles strait from the Ottoman Empire to open a sea route for the Allies to Russia through the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

About 46 per cent of regular force members are bilingual, including 73 per cent of regular force officers.
