Defence review to improve deployment benefits

By Stephen J. ThorneThe federal government will no longer tax deployed military and police personnel,
regardless of their mission’s risk, under changes proposed by Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. The measure is part of the coming defence review and is retroactive to Jan. 1. It will apply
to all of the approximately 1,450 personnel currently on international operations.

John McCrae’s baptism of fire

By Don Gillmor

The Boer War started the year John McCrae (REAR, LEFT) graduated from the University of Toronto’s medical school. He had served as an officer in the military reserves and had a romantic view of war that was soon stripped away by the realities in South Africa. More men died of disease than in combat. The field hospitals were a disaster.

He wrote in his diary: “21 July 1900, Our baptism of fire.”

Our vulnerable Arctic

By Stephen J. ThorneWhether Canadians like it or not, the militarization of the Arctic is
already well underway
. And with eight nations—Canada, Denmark, Finland,
Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States—having mounted
overlapping and disputed Arctic sovereignty claims, it’s a matter of put up or shut up.

A quiet victory in the Gulf

By Marc Milner

When Canada declared war on Germany in September 1939, the most immediate threat to the country was an attack on its shipping. That fear was so palpable that when periscopes were soon “sighted” in the St. Lawrence River, no one was surprised. Find out how Canada shut down the U-boat assault in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1942.
