Hello

Victory in Europe Day is generally known as VE Day in the UK and is a day celebrating the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8th May 1945. It was reported that Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader, had committed suicide on 30th April and during the Battle of Berlin, Germany’s surrender was authorised by Adolf Hitler’s successor, Reichspräsident Karl Dönitz. The act of military surrender was first signed at 02:41 on 7th May in SHAEF HQ at Reims and a slightly modified document was signed on 8th May in Berlin.

Today, 8th May 2021 our nation is remembering VE day during another very difficult period for our country. We are remembering all those who served to win our peace, and all those who gave the greatest sacrifice for our freedom. This is a time when we are facing different threats. More than ever, it is good to remember we have been through difficult times before, and we did it by working together.

This year, Royal British Legion Industries has embarked on the biggest national campaign in its history of more than 100 years to mark VE Day.

Last year, all celebrations were scrapped; the public was left with no way to recognise the iconic 75th anniversary of victory in Europe. And although the inaugural Tommy in the Window campaign enabled the Great British public to commemorate this momentous date in our country’s history, those celebrations were sadly muted.

However, this year, we saw the nation galvanised as part of Tommy’s Race to Victory – a truly national event which has seen RBLI’s iconic Tommy figure travel the length of the UK, stopping at iconic military locations and cities on the way.

#TeamTommy are on their final day of their 800 mile relay between our social enterprises, Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Erskine and Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Kent.  The Team are now only hours away from arriving at our Village in Aylesford to bring Tommy home for our VE Day celebrations.

On route, the team is stopping at cities and key military locations, presenting specially-made VE Day Tommy figures, made by injured veterans working in RBLI’s factories, to notable members of the local military communities.

You can find out more about the Relay, donate, and track #TeamTommy via our website.

Hello
RBLI’s Tommy’s Race to Victory is well underway with the team currently on their way to Newcastle.

For those of you that haven’t seen #TeamTommy are currently on an 800 mile relay between our social enterprises, Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Erskine and Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Kent.

On route, the team is stopping at cities and key military locations, presenting specially-made VE Day Tommy figures, made by injured veterans working in RBLI’s factories, to notable members of the local military community.

Our specially chosen team of seven, which includes RBLI’s chief executive Steve Sherry CMG OBE, are carrying a specially-made silver Tommy soldier figure, as a sign of national unity in the run up to the anniversary of the end of the war in Europe and are aiming to bring Tommy home to Aylesford on VE Day itself – 8th May.

You can find out more about the relay, donate, and track #TeamTommy via our website.

Hello
Our latest fundraising challenge, The Great Tommy Sleep Out, has seen supporters up and down the country brave the cold for a night (or a few!) this March in aid of the roughly 6,000 military veterans sadly living on the streets in the UK. Incredibly, more than 4,500 of you signed up to take on the challenge and have raised over £180,000 in just under 4 weeks. Beyond our wildest dreams!

The team at Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company has been working hard to fulfil the thousands of challenge fundraising packs, which includes a beanie hat and booklet printed professionally in-house! The community has loved the challenge so much they keep asking us what’s next… stand by for the VE Day line up Team Tommy!

“After completing the Tommy 10000 Step Challenge there was no way I wasn’t going to take part in this Sleep Out Challenge. My Son Thomas joined me again, as did a fellow Kings Regiment Veteran Rob, who had also signed up for the Challenge. Bring on the next one!”

Ian Gradwell, The Great Tommy Sleep Out Participant

PTSD Patches raise over £50,000

As a charity, we support a wide-ranging number of issues that are common amongst veterans, particularly PTSD. We are delighted to announce that sales from our PTSD awareness patches have raised over £50,000 for RBLI to help us continue our work supporting veterans through employment and housing.

This huge achievement is all thanks to Tommy Club Founding Patrons, Tim Brown and Paul Sapsford who designed, produced and donated these patches to help our veterans. None of this would have been possible without them and we are so grateful!

All patches are available to purchase through the RBLI shop.
