In Rememberance of Private Arthur Walker, Yorkshire Regiment.
The battalion was stationed in the Ypres salient in July 1917.
He had only been on the western front a month when he died from wounds received.
Aged 31 years  17th July 1917
My husband and I found Arthur’s grave, a truly special day for us.
Sharon honouring Arthur’s memory at his grave in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium on the 17th July 2019.
Arthur was my granny’s cousin.

IN HONOUR OF WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Saturday 10th October 2020
Here at RBLI we have 100 years of supporting veterans with mental health challenges, such as PTSD.

Friends of RBLI Paul Sapsford and Tim Brown have raised money and awareness of PTSD, a challenge faced by so many, with their velcro patches. Paul’s world was turned upside down when he came into contact with live wires in 2005. He only survived thanks to a quick-thinking apprentice who knocked him off his ladder.

Struggling to come to terms with the experience, Paul found himself out of work before eventually being diagnosed with PTSD. The pair have since raised nearly £40,000 selling these patches for our charity.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE TOMMY 10K?
 Get moving, challenge yourself and raise vital funds for our most vulnerable veterans.

What is the Tommy 10k? You can walk, run or wheel 10k between the 14th October – 14th November. There are various different difficulty levels depending on your fitness and ability. We have something for everyone!  🏃

It’s free to take part and you get a free Tommy 10k technical t-shirt. Join our Facebook community of others taking part in the event, swapping tips, tricks and motivation. 🎽

 All we ask is that you set up a fundraising page and share with your friends and family. 👍

Sapper Thomas Henry Frewer served in 295 Army Field Coy Royal Engineers, and was sadly was killed in action 17th September 1942 at El-Alamein, aged 22.There is no grave for family to go to, but they have been to the El-Alamein cemetery & laid a wreath at the memorial with his name on.

Thank you Val Alderidge for sharing the poignant and lasting memory of your uncle.

HOW WILL YOU REMEMBER THEM?
Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2020, is fast approaching and we know this year may be a little different to usual. But that won’t stop us all celebrating, honouring and remembering.

And what about this inspirational display from Suzie and Martin Orrell in East London! Using our Plant Pot Tommies and with some help from renowned graffiti artist A.Dee (also known as the Artful Dodger), they have created a stunning tribute to Suzies Grandfather, Remembrance Sunday and to respect for all those who gave their tomorrow for our today. 
Suzies Dad, who is now 78 years old, lost his Father on 17th March 1945 – three days after his third birthday. They believe he was fighting in North Africa with Montgommery’s Desert Rats, fell ill and somehow ended up in St John Hospital in Jerusalem. In early 2012, Suzie heard her Dad say the words “Hi Dad” for the very first time, at the grave site in Ramleh Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery.

Wow, what an incredible turn out we’ve had! So many people have been busy raising a cup (and vital funds) for our Tommies.

You’ve been so creative in ways to hold your Tommy Tea and we are seriously impressed. From bring your own picnic, cake deliveries and Zoom call parties. The rule of 6 hasn’t stopped anyone. Keep sharing your photos and top tips to inspire those yet to hold their tea!

Many of our supporters have asked if they can still hold a Tommy Tea – and the answer is of course YES PLEASE!

Tommy Teas will continue to be held well into November and we are here to support you. We have everything from recipe cards to social distancing tea tips.

With Nephews that served in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and a Son joining the Welsh Guards, Sharon Major loved the idea of holding a Tommy Tea.What an incredible job she’s done, raising £625 so far! 😆

We have been inundated with emails about holding your Tommy Tea this weekend – thank you all so much!
We’ve also been getting lots of emails asking for advice on keeping safe and within the rules for you future Tommy Teas. To help, we have prepared a special Social Distancing Guide to ensure you are able to ‘keep calm and carry on’ with your Tommy Tea. The guide has lots of hints and tips to ensure your Tommy Tea can still go ahead safely, and be truly terrific!

Sally-Anne in South Oxfordshire hosted her Tommy Tea in the front garden. And what a beautiful front garden she has! The weather wasn’t looking promising but as the guests arrived, the sun decided to put his hat on! 🌞
As well as invited guests, several families drop in as they were passing by. We can even spot a Tommy making a visit to this Tea!
Amanda and her team at Plyofit Elite Fitness in Telford proudly flying the flag for those in The Rifles regiment👏 . It’s great to see our bunting being put to use too!
Through hard times past and present and in the true spirit of the Blitz, we continue to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served and won our freedom (and enjoyed a good cuppa!).

RBLI’S FIRST EVER TOMMY TEA
Will you be joining with Alan, our 96 year old resident dancer, and throwing some shapes at your own Tommy Tea?
Residents at Queen Elizabeth Court held the first ever Tommy Tea this week, to raise money (and eat a lot cake!) for RBLI. There was magic on and off the dance floor as George shared some card tricks and little tipple of Red Velvet Bailey’s.

One amazing supporter will be holding their Tommy Tea in honour of their great grandfather, a stretcher bearer in WW1 and grandfather, who was interned in Burma. They’ve got a busy day planned including a bake off, raffle and name the teddy bear competition!

Now don’t worry if you’re short on ideas. We’ve introduced some party pieces to our downloadable collection that are sure to liven up your event! How about joining the great tea debate? Our office has voted and the result is… 6 or 7!

 Alexander used to love collecting outside Tesco, but covid put a stop to that. 😞 So instead he’s braving the coals and taking part in our fire walk challenge! Those coals are over 1200 degree Farenheit. What a legend!
