Recruitment posters were widely used during the First World War to encourage men to join the military effort. As the war progressed, the posters took a more forceful turn. This poster called out those passively standing in the crowds, challenging them to have courage and enlist.

Canada was an important supplier of food to Allied forces during the First World War. The Canada Food Board was created in 1918 to increase exports to Britain for troops overseas. This poster, produced by the Canada Food Board, discourages hoarding of food and points out punishments of fines and/or jail for those caught stockpiling.

Recruitment posters were widely used during the Second World War to encourage citizens to join the war effort. Women enlisting in the forces played an important role in the Second World War, as demonstrated by this RCAF poster seeking male and female recruits.

‘Revisionism’ can seem like a bad word. It can conjure up images of Stalinist-style rewriting of history or of societal pandering to the whims of political correctness.

Historical revisionism has been at the forefront of public discourse since city councils and state legislatures south of the border began voting to remove Confederate statues from public spaces two years ago. In Halifax, work crews recently removed an 86-year-old statue of the city’s founder, Edward Cornwallis, from a public park after protests over the fact that as Nova Scotia governor he had offered a bounty for Mi’kmaq fighters taken prisoner, or their scalps in 1749.
