Recruitment posters were widely used during the First World War to encourage men to join the military effort. As the war progressed, the posters took a more forceful turn. This poster called out those passively standing in the crowds, challenging them to have courage and enlist.
Canada was an important supplier of food to Allied forces during the First World War. The Canada Food Board was created in 1918 to increase exports to Britain for troops overseas. This poster, produced by the Canada Food Board, discourages hoarding of food and points out punishments of fines and/or jail for those caught stockpiling.

This poster shamed fathers who remained at home during the First World War into enlisting so they might have stories to tell their children after the war’s end.
