For better or worse,
Canada had to step up in Afghanistan

Story and photography by Stephen J. Thorne

Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan was not simply knee-jerk acquiescence to the elephant next door. Twenty-six Canadian civilians were among the 2,977 people killed on 9/11. Reason enough to hit back at the people and resources behind the al-Qaida terrorists who planned and engineered the attacks. Afghan Taliban and opium poppies were those people and resources.

Almost two decades later, neither objective has been achieved. The Taliban has not been eliminated and the poppy industry has not been eradicated.

The big raid

The big raid

Story by Sharon Adams

Early in the First World War, the Allies used trench raids to keep the Germans nervous, the constant harassment eating away at their morale, while keeping their own troops sharp between battles.

The Canadian Corps had learned a lot since their first raid in 1915, and by 1917, were the acknowledged masters of the art. Trench raids were a key component in preparation for the coming assault on Vimy Ridge.

A massive raid involving 860 specially trained troops was planned for mid-January 1917 on the German trenches near Calonne, France, northwest of Vimy Ridge.

Help Us Commemorate Iwo Jima this February

An item from a local veterans group in the Bay Area.

Iwo Jima Flag Raising

75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima

featuring Guest Speaker Colonel Peter Underwood, USMC (Ret)
13 February 2020 – 6pm

Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel – 609 Sutter St, San Francisco

Please join us for an event commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima on Thursday, 13 February 2020 at 6pm at the Marines’ Memorial Club. Our Guest Speaker will be Colonel Peter Underwood, USMC (Ret).

We will be remembering those who fought on Iwo Jima 75 years ago as Colonel Peter Underwood, USMC (Ret) talks about the strategy and history of the battle. Colonel Underwood served in the United States Marines for 32 years and currently teaches a course on strategy and operations for the Naval War College’s College of Distance Education and is writing a history of the Marine Corps in the First World War. He is also a historian and tour guide with Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours.

Because of the brutality of the fighting, the fact that the battle occured fairly close to the end of World War II, and the famous flag-raising photo from Joe Rosenthal, Iwo Jima – and those who lost their lives trying to capture the island – retain a great deal of significance even today.

This is a free event; please RSVP by clicking the link below or calling 415-673-6672 ext 238.
