🍁 Canada Day at Your House: a Virtual Celebration 🍁

Given that these events are virtual this year, they may be of interest to members of our branch (and would be of definite interest to our comrades in the two LA-area branches and the San Diego branch).

Canada Day at Your House

Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, starting at 6:00 PM PST

With the support of the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles,  will unite to host the official Canada Day for Southern California on Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, at 6:00 pm PST.

Given the current circumstances and government rules and restrictions surrounding COVID-19, we have decided to make this a free and virtual event. It will be streamed live for everyone to enjoy from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Canadians of all ages living in Southern California and beyond are invited to join.

Plus, scroll down for exciting discounts from Canadian owned businesses offering great food and drink specials to enjoy on the day!

With over 11,000 loyal followers between all organizations, it is anticipated it will be one of the largest Canada Day virtual events outside of Canada.

More details will be made available through www.canadiansabroad.com or www.canadiansinoc.com, social media, and through event hashtags: #CanadaDayUSA and #SoCalCanadaDay.

Military Milestones
The U-Boat Hunter

The U-boat hunter

Story by Sharon Adams

As a boy growing up in Victoria, James Douglas Prentice knew he wanted a naval career, but his English-born father refused to let him join the newly formed Canadian Navy, so Chummy, as he was known, spent the next 22 years in the Royal Navy, which he joined as an officer cadet in 1912.

He rose steadily to lieutenant-commander, but when it became clear the Depression was going to stall his career at that rank, he took early retirement and returned to British Columbia. His second naval career, during the Second World War, was where he would make his mark.

The “Miracle of Dunkirk” came at high cost

The “Miracle of Dunkirk” came at high cost

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

British prime minister Winston Churchill called the 1940 evacuation of British and Allied troops from the French port at Dunkirk “a colossal military disaster.” He also called it “a miracle of deliverance.”

Somehow, defeat had turned to victory, of sorts.

Between May 27 and June 4, a ragtag fleet of 850 barges, ferries, fishing boats, lifeboats and pleasure craft, all summoned by the small-craft section of the British Ministry of Shipping, set sail from Ramsgate and made its way 40 kilometres across the English Channel.
