Are you ready to join the Tommy Club?

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

Are you ready to join the Tommy Club?

Hi

Today, the former Head of the British Army and Founding President of the Tommy Club Lord Richard Dannatt calls on you, to join his new veterans’ support club.

The Tommy Club will ensure the stories of yesterday are shared with the next generation, and those heroes who risked their lives in conflict for our precious freedoms are looked after for many years to come. Together, we will raise crucial funds for ex-servicemen and women and help them into work.

Improving the Lives of our Nation’s Heroes

There has never been a more important time for us to commit our support to the veterans of today and make certain that we can be here for them for decades to come.

From elderly WW2 heroes who risked their lives to win us our precious freedoms, to the young ex-servicemen and women who suffered devastating injuries and trauma during more recent conflicts, we want to be here for them in their moment of need.

And it’s you, together with fellow Tommy Club Champions from all over this country, who can make this happen. Together we can ensure these heroes are never isolated and never left behind.

The Inspirational Work of Tommy Club Supporters

We are so grateful for our Tommy Club supporters showing the true Tommy spirit. As part of our recent ‘Tommy Tea’ fundraising event, Stephen Shaw from Southampton created and delivered 77 individual tea and sandwich parcels to armed forces veterans living alone in his local area. A tea time Zoom event was hosted to unite the local veterans – no one need have their tea alone. Stephen was even kind enough to give each veteran their very own Tommy Pin in their parcels; what a shining example of a Tommy Club supporter!

Wouldn’t you like to be part of such an amazing, supporting community?

Thanksgiving…A Time To Be Thankful For Family.

Another note from the Juno Beach Center virtual run.

We Are Thankful For Families!
This Thanksgiving, we want to thank all of you who shared your family Remembrance Day stories. (We have a new story below to share you.) We are forever thankful to those brave Canadians who sacrificed so much for all of us!
Choose one of three Historically Significant Distances and then run or walk to honour a family member who served, or in memory of the Canadians and the sacrifices they made in Normandy – just like Bonnie did in memory of her father, Frank Decareau…
Remembrance Day Race Story Honouring Frank Decareau
Bonnie recently did the 2020 Remembrance Day Virtual Race Walk in memory of her father, Frank Decareau. Her grandson Leland Bowman joined Bonnie for the walk.
The video (below) was taken at the Holy Well Cemetery, Mount Saint Patrick, Ontario following Bonnie and Lelang’s walk. We are so thankful to Bonnie for sharing her family’s story with us!
Remembrance Day Races are three Virtual Running & Walking Events to Benefit the Juno Beach Centre, Canada’s Second World War Museum and Cultural Centre located in Normandy, France. $10 from every registration goes directly to the Juno Beach Centre.
Each virtual race kit includes the incredible, over-sized, commemorative medal (shown above), as well as a beautifully imprinted neck gaitor or mask, a Remembrance Day poppy, a Juno Beach D-Day souvenir map, a keepsake race bib, and more!
Choose one of three Historically Significant Distances:
StrongPoint 1500m, Juno Beach 8K, or Remembrance 21.1K
and then share with us the story of your run or walk to honour a family member or the memory of those Canadians who served.

🍁 Happy Thanksgiving from Canadian Studies! 🍁
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Canadian Studies Program, I would like to wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving. While we unfortunately can’t meet in person this year, I hope that you are able to spend this time with those closest to you. In an unpredictable world, it’s important to take the time to appreciate what we have, and reflect on what we’re grateful for. For us, we’re thankful for the support of our friends from across the United States and Canada. Whether you attend our colloquia or support our graduate students’ research, you make our work not only possible, but worthwhile.
Wishing you and yours a happy (and healthy) holiday,
Irene Bloemraad
Program Director 🦃

October Marks Landmark Women’s Rights Anniversaries for Canada, UC Berkeley
Since 1992, October has been Women’s History Month in Canada. The date commemorates the landmark 1929 Persons Case, when the Privy Council ruled that the word “persons” in the 1867 British North American Act included women in response to a petition from five Alberta suffragists. This landmark ruling paved the way for the appointment of women to the Canadian Senate, and expanded other opportunities for women throughout Canada. In recognition of women’s contributions to the development of the country, the Government of Canada has created a timeline of important moments in Canadian women’s history from 1645-present, available here.
October 3 also marked a landmark in UC Berkeley history: the 150th anniversary of the unanimous approval of a resolution to allow young women to attend UC Berkeley on equal status with men. To celebrate, the campus has created a special 150 Years of Women at Berkeley website also highlighting the many contributions of women to the university. The collection features historical resources and articles on famous alumnae and affiliates from Rosa Scrivener, the first women to graduate from Berkeley in 1874, to 2020 Nobel Prize winning faculty member Jennifer Doudna.
