| For you before Remembrance

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

Hi ,

Yesterday, the 6th of November, marks one year since Her Majesty the Queen visited our Village. It was such a special day, and an incredible honour to welcome her to our Village. Her Majesty launched the second phase of RBLI’s Centenary Village project – a £22m development which will provide a home to hundreds of veterans every year for the next century.

It’s a little different on the Village today, much quieter, but we will hold onto our memories until we meet again.

This Week on the RBLI Village

Steve’s Lockdown Baking!

Steve, who lives in Mountbatten Pavilion has been busy making bread thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund who kindly funded baking boxes for RBLI’s village. By the looks of it, Steve has nailed it! New career path maybe..?
There’s certainly no *loafing* around here!

…..(we’ll show ourselves out!)

George’s Mission to keep the Village Fit

Former Royal Marine, George Bradford, has been running armchair fitness classes for the residents in our assisted living accommodation, Queen Elizabeth Court, throughout the previous lockdown. With the return of lockdown, he has decided to branch out into the world of social media to help keep the nation active through the next month, even while being stuck at home!

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more from George!

Our RAF Poet is Back!

In last week’s newsletter, RAF Veteran Mark Hamill’s beautiful Remembrance poem was featured. Upon popular request, here is another of his poems.
Silence
They marched in silence, their heads held high,
Not seen by the thousands standing by.
They marched with friends, comrades all.
They marched like when they took the call.

They marched with those from yesterday, in sorrow,
For they cannot march with those of tomorrow.
Their eyes see only long gone scenes;
They only hear the battle screams.

They would be old but they march as youth.
What they were once, ’tis the truth!
They walk as men and women too,
Brave? No, just folk like me and you.

So when you stand on Remembrance Day,
Heads bowed and you softly say.
“You have come from close by and faraway
But please; can I march with you today?”

You gave everything you had to give
So that we in harmony could live.
So come with us as we observe
With honour, those that gave and served.

Lest We Forget.

‘Show us your Tommy’ Response

We received a great response to our request to ‘show us your Tommy’ in last Sunday’s email. It’s wonderful to see where our Tommies have ended up. The support for our veterans in this Remembrance period is really great to see. Here’s some of our favourites:

You’re Invited! 245th USMC Birthday Celebration

An item from a fellow veterans organization in the Bay Area.

Marines' Memorial Logo

You are Invited

Join us “virtually” on 10 November at 5pm Pacific to celebrate the Marine Corps’ 245th Birthday!

What does the Marine Corps Birthday mean to you?

To us at the Marines’ Memorial, the Birthday is a chance to celebrate the honor, tradition, camaraderie, and dedication of United States service members.

The Club is known for our festive Birthday Ball that normally gathers more than 500 attendees to eat, drink, dance, and celebrate the USMC together. This year, we have had to think beyond our normal traditions to pay proper tribute to the Corps.  Combining new messages from our President & CEO, Chairman, and Guest of Honor General Peter Pace, USMC (Ret), plus archival footage from past Birthday Balls at the Club, we will have a virtual celebration that honors the Birthday and helps us come together, even if we are not in the same room.

On 10 November at 5pm Pacific, we hope you have some wine (or a martini) and a slice of cake ready to celebrate with Marines’ Memorial and our incredible members.  (The video will be available on YouTube any time after 5pm as well!)

Happy Birthday and Semper Fidelis,

LtGen Michael A. Rocco and Your Marines’ Memorial Team
