Mission Matters Newsletter: friend of Wreaths Across America – A Few Ways You Can Say “Welcome Home.”

A newsletter from an important veterans organization here in the United States.

Dear friend of Wreaths Across America,

On Monday, March 29, Wreaths Across America will dedicate the day to honoring our nation’s Vietnam Veterans as we recognize National Vietnam War Veterans Day. However, this is not something we only do one day a year. As a Commemorative Partner of The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, we actively honor these veterans every day through the sharing of their stories and by saying “Welcome Home” every time we have the privilege of doing so.

The Mobile Education Exhibit has been on the road since February, and in that time the team has had the honor of pinning and welcoming home more than 130 Vietnam Veterans. As we do at the WAA National Museum Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home Exhibit, we ask these veterans to sign the wall as part of this presentation so their names are written for posterity and said aloud by future generations.

Next week, I’ll be traveling to Arlington, Virginia, to meet with leadership of the Vietnam War Commemoration to renew our partnership so that we can continue to expand upon our mission to Remember, Honor, Teach, through outreach in the communities where these veterans and their families live, to help welcome them all home, and to teach the next generation about their sacrifice, courage and patriotism.

Please join us, next week and always, as we share these veterans stories of character and service.

With gratitude,

Karen Worcester

What is a Veteran’s Wreath?

Wreaths Across America does not ‘decorate’ graves. Our more than two million volunteers place live, hand-made Veterans’ Wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s heroes each December as a symbol of Honor and Respect.

In our newest video 13-year old ‘Mighty’ Miles Worcester shares what these wreaths mean and why it is so important to honor them all.

Declassified documents shed new light on notorious sinking of USS Thresher

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

At 8 a.m. on April 9, 1963, USS Thresher (SSN-593), the lead boat in its class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, left port at Kittery, Maine, for a series of dive tests in the deep ocean 350 kilometres east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, after a nine-month overhaul.

Some 25 hours later, while Thresher was nearing test depth during its first deep-dive trials, USS Skylark, the submarine rescue ship that was on station at the time, received a garbled message via underwater telephone.

Story by Sharon Adams

On the morning of March 24, 1945, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion jumped into heavily defended territory on the east bank of the Rhine River, part of the airborne assault during the Battle of the Bulge.
“They called it Operation Varsity,” recalled Herb Harris, a member of the battalion. “Our group of 2,000 men jumped together in six minutes, going out one on top of the other. We landed across the Rhine and we were right on top of the Jerries. It was intense fire—the Germans just opened up on us.”
