‘Come dive with us:’ The politics of archeology

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

On April 22, 2022, locked in an epic struggle for its very existence, the government in Kyiv took the seemingly incongruous step of declaring the recently sunken Russian warship Moskva a Ukrainian underwater cultural object.

Moskva had been hit nine days earlier by two Neptune anti-ship missiles fired from somewhere south of Odessa.

The sinking was particularly satisfying to Ukrainians, not only because the 39-year-old missile cruiser was the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet or that it was in the vanguard of Russia’s invasion of their country, but because it was Moskva that had ordered Ukrainian troops garrisoned on Snake Island to surrender, only to be told: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself!”

Daughters of the King now mothers of Canada

STORY BY SHARON ADAMS

In the mid-1660s, King Louis XIV of France had a problem.

He wanted to establish a strong and profitable colony in North America. But male workers who finished their contracts and soldiers who left the army did not stay on in New France. It was no way to build a colony.

An incentive was needed to keep them in Canada. The king’s advisor Jean-Baptiste Colbert had a solution.

Women. And in short order, children.

Service dogs for those who served
In August 2018, the Legion’s Ontario Provincial Command partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) to launch Operation Service Dog, with the goal to pair as many injured Veterans as feasible with trained Service Dogs. In the past 12 months alone, WWC is estimating the pairing and placement of 25 Service Dogs with Veterans in Ontario, with a further 18 in training – an increase from 17 dogs paired and placed the previous 12 months, demonstrating that this initiative is producing results!

During a community crisis, Team Rubicon Canada, a Veteran-led disaster relief organization, and the Tweed Legion came together to support the town and get the community back on its feet, exemplifying the qualities upheld at The Royal Canadian Legion.
“Team Rubicon Canada is proud to be part of this story and to have served this incredibly strong community when they needed help the most.
Our Greyshirts are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support the people of the Municipality of Tweed, Mayor Joanne Albert, Tweed Legion, Donna Bunting, and all the local restaurants have shown our team after each day of sweaty volunteer disaster response work helping our neighbours.” – Team Rubicon Canada

As a commitment to preserve the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Supply Department has created a lapel pin as a visible representation of our gratitude for her unwavering service.
