Remember our Medal of Honor heroes

More of American members of this branch, we wanted to share this item from a fellow Bay Area veterans organization.

MARINES' MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION & FOUNDATION | Today Is National Medal of Honor Day
Dear Michael Barbour,
Today, we commemorate our military heroes who displayed outstanding valor in combat. Tragically, many paid the ultimate price.
On this solemn occasion, I think it’s only fitting that we recognize all those who risk their lives to serve our Country.
You can honor the legacy of military service by supporting programs like our Living Memorial, which preserves photos and memorabilia from all branches, or our Tribute Wall, which memorializes those who have sacrificed their lives since 9/11. Our primary mission is to Educate, Commemorate, and Serve the Active Duty and Veteran community. 100% of your donation goes to support these heroes along with their families.
Thank you for honoring America’s heroes.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Rocco Signature

Comradeship over a cup of joe
Buddy Check Coffee is a peer support program bringing together Veterans in communities across Canada. Coordinated by Veteran Legion members trained in mental health first aid for Veterans, the program provides a safe space for Veterans and their families to network and share experiences and stories over a coffee.
Derrick McClinchey, Buddy Check Coffee coordinator for the Legion Victory Branch 317 in London, Ontario, recently shared the experience of fellow Veteran Reverend Troy Dingwell, a participant at a recent event. Hear his story and see how Buddy Check Coffee is making a difference.

A Roman legionnaire’s pay slip and the siege at Masada

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

A Roman soldier’s pay slip uncovered outside the ancient fortress at Masada several years ago suggests little has changed when it comes to the army, the fighting man and unfair labour practices.

Written on a scrap of papyrus, the 1,900-year-old pay slip—one of only three ever found in the Roman Empire—shows that the imperial grunt was left penniless once the military recouped expenses for meals, equipment, clothes, even horse feed.

Divisive figure: remembering Quebec nationalist Paul Rose

STORY BY PAIGE GILMAR

Ten years ago, on March 14, the ringleader of the October Crisis, died. But it turned out that this figure, so imperative to the Quebec sovereignty movement, was aptly name—for no man came out of the situation smelling like a rose better than Paul Rose himself.

“A folk hero to some, a murderer to most, Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) terrorist Paul Rose is one of the most polarizing figures in Quebec history,” historian Éric Bédard told The Montreal Gazette.

Reminder – ANZAC Day Service & Reception

Join the Branch 25 of the Royal Canadian Legion at the annual ANZAC Day organized by the Australian American Chamber of Commerce San Francisco and New Zealand American Association of San Francisco.  While they wouldn’t join Canada for another 35 years, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment landed in Gallipoli in September 1915 and would fight alongside their ANZAC comrades until the Allied withdrawal in January 1916 (for more information on Newfoundland’s involvement, visit https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/classroom/gallipoli ).  Each year the Royal Canadian Legion joins with our Aussie and Kiwi colleagues to commemorate this engagement.

Sunday, April 23
2:00pm – 5:00pm PDT

USS Hornet – Sea, Air and Space Museum
707 W Hornet Ave

It is free to attend the service, which is held from 2pm to 3pm.  Tickets for the BBQ that begin at 3pm are $25 and can be purchased at https://www.sfaussies.com/event-5199509
