Vietnam Era Veteran Lapel Pin: Wayne Padgett

Over the past few months the branch has been involved in the distribution of the Vietnam Era Veteran Lapel Pin Commemoration Program.  According to the organization, “the Commemoration is providing Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pins to Commemorative Partners for presentations to U.S. military veterans, living at home or abroad, who served during the Vietnam War period as a lasting memento of the Nation’s thanks.  Living U.S. veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, are eligible to receive one lapel pin.  We make no distinction between veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period.  All were called to serve, none could self-determine where they were stationed, and all were seen in the same way by a country that could not separate the war from the warrior, as we do today.”

Yesterday Comrade Siefken Krieger – himself an awardee of one of these pins –  presented Wayne Padget, former Branch 25 President/Commander, with a pin.

The video of the full presentation is below.

The bombers and the nightingales

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

One of the most stirring audio recordings of the Second World War didn’t involve the crack of gunfire, the thunder of explosions, the excitement of a bomber crew under nightfighter attack or the urgent beep-beep-beep of a last, desperate Morse code message emitted from an overrun Pacific outpost.

While all those tapes were made between 1939 and 1945, providing listeners with spellbinding sound, few—if any—bore the poignancy of a nightingale’s song set to the ominous, Beethovian rumble of 197 Allied warplanes passing overhead.

Forcing the hand of peace

STORY BY PAIGE JASMINE GILMAR

Sixty-three years ago, on July 30, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, in an attempt to save face, had an announcement to make.

He declared that Canada would make a sizeable contribution to the United Nations intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But Diefenbaker was hardly acting on his own accord.

Canada’s History Archive featuring The Beaver

Please note: Some items featured in our newsletters and social media will include links to the Canada’s History Archive. The Beaver magazine was founded, and for decades was published, during eras shaped by colonialism. Concepts such as racial, cultural, or gender equality were rarely, if ever, considered by the magazine or its contributors. In earlier issues, readers will find comments and terms now considered derogatory. Canada’s History Society cautions readers to explore the archive using historical thinking concepts — not only analyzing the content but asking questions of who shaped the content and why.

Dear Michael Barbour,

This weekend the staff of WAA and the community of Columbia Falls, Maine, will welcome WAA volunteers, sponsors, partners, veterans, and Blue Star and Gold Star families to our 10th Annual Stem to Stone event.

We have been busy planning a full three days of fun, fellowship and entertainment and will also take the opportunity to honor the accomplishments of some of our special guests.

The goal of this event is to unite and focus on our year-round mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom, as well as provide an opportunity to see the “journey“ of a veteran’s wreath. This journey starts in Downeast Maine with the harvesting of tips or boughs from the balsam trees and ends with the careful placement on the headstones of our American heroes all over the world.

Although the mechanics of what this amazing team accomplishes are impressive, the inspiration of the story is what people can accomplish when they come together for a common good. This program and mission continue to grow because of thousands of individuals who step up to “play a part,” register a location to participate, download and share curriculum, donate trucking services, raise funds for sponsorships or maybe transport a veteran to a ceremony, or join us in placing wreaths on National Wreaths Across America Day. The contribution of time and commitment by our volunteers is literally the key factor in our successful mission!

In the next few days, we will share laughter and tears, learn from each other’s experiences and hopefully take away a renewed commitment to share with our millions of supporters.

I personally want to thank all of you for your continued support. It is the hands and hearts of those along the way that make it possible for a successful journey from Stem to Stone.

“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” H.E. Luccock

Remember – Honor – Teach

With gratitude,
