We’re excited to bring you our next virtual “Meet the Author” featuring Jonathan M. Katz, author of Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire. In this video interview, Marines’ Memorial Foundation Chairman (and self-proclaimed capitalist) Barrie Graham talks with Katz about Smedley Butler’s storied military career and how he went from Quaker to Marine General to anti-war and anti-imperialist activist.

About the Author:

Jonathan Myerson Katz , author of Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire, received the James Foley/Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for reporting from Haiti. His first book, The Big Truck That Went By, was shortlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction and won the Overseas Press Club’s Cornelius Ryan Award, the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, and the WOLA/Duke Book Award for Human Rights in Latin America. His work appears in The New York Times, Foreign Policy, and elsewhere. Katz has received fellowships from New America and the Logan Nonfiction Program. He lives with his wife and daughter in Charlottesville, VA.

About the Moderator:

Barrie Graham, Marine Veteran, has been a leader in the financial services industry for over 25 years, most recently serving as COO of WR Hambrecht & Co, an investment banking firm in San Francisco. Prior to WRH+Co, Graham was President & CEO of Exchange Bank and held senior management positions at Wells Fargo. Graham is Chairman of Marines’ Memorial Foundation and serves as a Board Member of Canine Companions for Independence, Empire College, Empire Law School, Truett Hurst Winery and the Investment Committee of the Community Foundation in Sonoma County.

As previously announced, it was our hope to host the 16th Annual Gold Star Parents Honor and Remembrance event in person, but with the cyclical nature of Covid-19 and various restrictions, we made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person event.

As a way to honor these families, we have created a video to commemorate their fallen heroes that includes a special message from Guest of Honor, Col Willy Buhl, USMC (Ret).

We invite you to join us for this special live tribute video airing this Friday, February 25th at 10:00 am PT, on Marines’ Memorial Club’s YouTube channel. (The video will be available on demand after 10am on Friday.)

Marines’ Memorial welcomes back General David H. Petraeus, USA (Ret) as our first in-person speaker for 2022!

General Petraeus, a renowned leader in the military and intelligence communities, will take part in our “Leading from the Front” series with our host, award-winning news correspondent, Mike Cerre.

General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military, culminating his career with six consecutive commands, including command of the 101st Airborne Division during the fight to Baghdad and the first year in Iraq, command of the Multinational Security Transition Command in Iraq, command of coalition forces in Iraq during the Surge, command of U.S. Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan.   Following retirement from the military, he served as Director of the CIA during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror. General Petraeus is currently a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute, which he established in May 2013.  He is also a member of the boards of directors of Optiv and FirstStream, a venture investor in more than 15 startups, and engaged in a variety of academic endeavors.

We hope you can join us for this lively conversation that will explore General Petraeus’s thoughts on current military strategy and lessons learned during his military and civilian career.
