Live With Purpose. This Month, We’re Highlighting Their Concern For The Future.

An item from the Wreaths Across America organization.

The chill of Fall has arrived in the air here in Maine. Things are getting busy at the national headquarters as our volunteers step up their efforts to prepare for National Wreaths Across America Day 2024. But they know our mission is year-round, as demonstrated by our “Live With Purpose” series.

This month’s presentation is focused on their concern for the future and inspired by the family of Captain Eric A. Jones, who died in service to our country in 2009, and their commitment to continuing his life mission.

This December, when we take our families to place wreaths on the graves of those who have served, we have the opportunity to honor them not only by remembering them but also by sharing their stories with the children. The lessons we can share with our children about selflessness, service and responsibility affect their lives and shape the future of family, community and country.

We can best help shape the future – their future by helping them understand that freedom comes at great cost and with great responsibility.

With gratitude,
Karen Worcester

Live with Purpose: Their Concern for the Future

The 8th attribute of a veteran’s wreath is “their concern for the future.” This month, we were honored to meet and inspired by the family of Capt. Eric A. Jones, who died in service to our country in 2009. Their commitment to continuing his life mission through the non-profit Heroes in Transition is truly inspiring. You can support this great program and WAA by sponsoring a veteran’s wreath through their Sponsorship Group.

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

There must be something in the water they give those athletes at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships.

The 2024 Summer Olympics was proof positive of the Nationals’ fundamental role in the rise of elite Canadian sports men and women—28 Legion Nationals alumni wore Canadian red and white in Paris, including bronze-medalist pole vaulter Alysha Newman of London, Ont., and golden shot putters Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers, both B.C. natives.

And judging by three balmy August days of competition at the 2024 Legion Nationals in Calgary, the future looks bright.

Currie’s crossing: Remembering the Battle of Canal du Nord

STORY BY ALEX BOWERS

The Canadian Corps had cracked the Drocourt-Quéant Line, the Germans had withdrawn to their final defence at the Hindenburg Line, and the combined Allied forces under Marshal Ferdinand Foch sensed victory in the air.

But it wasn’t over yet—far from it.

Among the objectives still to wrest from enemy hands was the textile town and vital communications hub of Cambrai. The shock troops of General Arthur Currie’s corps would again be thrust into the fray, but first they needed to secure a crossing over the Canal du Nord before clearing Bourlon Wood en route to the prize. They also needed to break the well-prepared Marcoing defensive system. Brimming with machine-gun nests, it had the makings of a bloodbath.

EVENT TODAY

National Identity and Immigration in Contemporary Quebec: Comparing Majority and Minority Perspectives

Tues., Sept. 24 | 12:30 pm | 223 Philosophy Hall | RSVP

Immigration and ethnocultural diversity have been at the center of debates in Quebec society since the early 2000s. These include: how governments should respond to demands from minority groups for religious accommodation; what are optimal inflows of immigrants to the province; and what degree of integration is expected from newcomers. What relationship do majority-group Quebecers expect to have with immigrants? And what relationship do immigrants and ethnocultural minorities expect to have with Quebec?

This talk attempts to provide some empirical evidence for, and reflections on, answers to these questions. It draws from multiple recently-published studies and the speaker’s in-progress research. The first part of the talk sheds light on how Quebecers define their national identity and the resultant ramifications for immigration and ethnocultural diversity. The second part of the talk presents evidence indicating an “identity deficit” observable among immigrants and ethnocultural minorities in relation to Quebec, and attempts to explain what may cause this weaker identification with Quebec.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Antoine Bilodeau is a professor of political science at Concordia University in Montreal. His research focuses on immigrant integration and the dynamics of openness to immigration and ethnocultural diversity in Quebec and other multinational states. He has led several large-scale survey projects investigating public opinion across Canada around identity, views towards federalism, and attitudes towards immigrants and diversity. Dr. Bilodeau is the recipient of Concordia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Research (2023), as well as the 2016-17 Concordia University Research Award. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto.
