From the Wreaths Across America organization.
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Mission Matters!

These two words — mission matters — have been the guiding principle used in all that Wreaths Across America has done and plans to do in the future. Our mission — to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and their families, and Teach our children about the cost of freedom — resonates in the homes of every American across this great country.

Year after year we see new volunteers step forward from every walk of life to become part of and share this mission in communities in every state. We will share their stories of patriotism and community with you here each month as well as on a new radio program with the same name that I’m excited to be hosting on Wreaths Across America Radio starting in March.

2017 was our most successful year to date, with more than 1.5million veterans’ wreaths placed on headstones of our fallen veterans. Click on the link below to download the infographic to see additional details from 2017. We are expecting that number to continue to grow in 2018 and beyond because of the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and the generous support of many grateful Americans.

Wreaths Across America Announces 2018 Theme

“BE THEIR WITNESS.”
The inspiration for this year’s theme stems from the 2009 drama “Taking Chance,” which was based on the experiences of Marine Colonel Michael Strobl, who escorted the body of a fallen Marine, PFC Chance Phelps back to his hometown in Wyoming from the Iraq War. Learn more.

Denny Hart, retired U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps Warrant Officer shares his background and his experience with meeting a special helper at Wreaths Across America Day 2015 on the blog. This year, Denny has stepped up as a Group Leader to help promote wreath sponsorships for the Camp Nelson National Cemetery. His son has volunteered his time and expertise to create and host a website to support the effort to remember and honor 15,000 veterans laid to rest there on national wreath day, Saturday, December 15, 2018.

The Wreaths Across America fundraising program has helped other groups such as Civil Air Patrol, Scouts, 4-H Clubs, local VFWs and American Legions raise funds for their own community needs.

How it works: Wreaths Across America returns $5 of every $15 wreath sponsorship you raise to support your organization. Since 2007, Wreaths Across America has given back more than $8 million to local charities through this fundraising structure. To sign up as a fundraising group, click the button below.

New Year, New Opportunities
Over the last several weeks, the team has been working diligently to review feedback and answer questions from dedicated volunteers and supporters across the country. As a result, we are going to take the necessary time needed over the next several weeks to make some changes and really focus our efforts on the information our followers are looking to receive from us. During this time, we’ll be pausing the distribution of the newsletter, but will be back the last week of February with a revised format, fresh design and original content — including features by guest columnists and images from across the country. We’ll also be sharing our new theme for 2018 in that issue! 
In the interim, I encourage you to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and tune into WAA Radio to keep up to date with new stories about service and sacrifice and to stay in the know about all things Wreaths Across America.
I continue to be humbled by the amazing people we’ve met and heartfelt stories shared through the incredible growth of this organization, and I am SO excited for what’s to come in 2018. Stay tuned for more!

On January 23rd, we remembered Navy Lieutenant Russell Ford Kippen who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving during WWII on this day in 1946.
On January 24th, we honored Army Pfc. Jesus A. Leon-Perez who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day 13 years ago while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On January 25th, we remembered Marine Private First Class Joseph Lynn Meade who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Vietnam on this day in 1969.
On January 26th,  we recognized Army Sgt. 1st Class Matthew R. Kahler who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 27th, we honored Air Force Captain Laurence Edward Anctilmade who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving during the Korean War 67 years ago on this day.
On January 28th, we recognized Army Sgt. David L. Herrera and Army Pfc. Brian J. Schoff who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day in 2006 while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On January 29th, we honored, Coast Guard Enlisted Charles H. Fletcherwho made the ultimate sacrifice on this day in 1942 while serving during WWII.
And on January 30th, Join us in honoring the life, service and sacrifice of Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mark S. O’Steen. He gave his life on this day 15 years ago while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Volunteers Make The Patriotic Wheel Go Round
This week we recap the past weekend’s events, with volunteers ‘retiring the wreaths’ at Arlington National Cemetery and hundreds of other locations nationwide.
We have several stories about how volunteers show their patriotic support, each in their own unique way. Of course, that is how the wreath-laying tradition got started over twenty five years ago, when a Wreath-Maker from Maine gave back in the way he knew how.
And did you notice the section called “This Week We Remembered” down below? Read the names slowly.

Showing Respect With The Retiring Of The Wreaths
This past weekend and over the next several, our 1422 locations nationwide will be organizing volunteers for what we call ‘The Retiring of the Wreaths’ – cleanup effort that is every bit as patriotic as the day the wreaths are placed in December.
In fact, if you have ever heard the song Veterans Day, by Don Campbell (a long time WAA supporter) you know that we “teach our children how to respect, by mowing the lawns for Veterans Day.” 
With winter weather wreaking havoc over most of the country, there is not a lot of lawn mowing to worry about. But for those who serve (and those who love them) each day is Veterans Day, or Memorial Day, and we cannot show our appreciation enough.
Note – Don is also the one who wrote the Snow at Arlington, about Wreaths Across America. Definitely worth a listen if you have not heard it.
With those words and spirit in mind, this week’s newsletter salutes our hard-working, and ever dutiful Location Coordinators who make the Wreath Day events happen in communities all across this great land.
Without them and all our dedicated volunteers, there would be no Wreath Day and no Mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach.

Now that we are into 2018 and past the holiday week, we are back on our regular publishing schedule (Tuesdays), with more great stories for and about out veterans.

Each day we #SayTheirNames and #We Remember:

On January 2nd, we remembered Army Capt. Kimberly N. Hampton, who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day 14 years ago while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On January 3rd, we posted about Marine Sgt. Thomas E. Houser, who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day 13 years ago while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On January 4th, we honored Navy Lieutenant Jesse Beasley who served during the Korean War and gave his life on this day in 1954.
On January 5th, we recognized the service and sacrifice of Army Major Michael L. Mundell made the ultimate sacrifice on this day 11 years ago.
For January 6th, we gave tribute and a moment of silence for Army PFC Edward Joseph Drew IIgave his life for our country on this day 50 years ago while serving in Vietnam.
On January 7th, we remembered Marine Sergeant Wallace Norman Wood who served during the Korean War.
And on January 8th, we honored the loss 9 years ago, of Army Cpl. Keith E. Essary and Army Sgt. Joshua L. Rath who gave their lives while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.
“Remember this…. In truth a person dies twice, once when he stops breathing, and a second time when somebody mentions his or her name for the last time. Join us in December when over one million volunteers nationwide, will say the names of a million fallen out loud, to make sure they will never be forgotten.”
