Voices Of Our Volunteers

This week we saw with pride that WAA volunteer and veteran of three wars (WWII, Korea, and Vietnam) Carmine Pecorelli is being honored by his Alma Mater, The Citadel.

Some readers may recognize Carmine for his amazing story (video), and ability to connect with the younger generations of Wreaths Across America supporters.
It reminded me how fortunate we are to have such hard working, dedicated volunteers all across the Nation, focused on this mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach.
Have you signed up as a volunteer to participate this December? It is a great way to get updates and event details for your local community. You can see a map (search by your town or zip code) of our 1300+ participating locations to sign up near you – and let others know you are on the mission too!

Listening During A Week of Controversy and Pain

For those of us who feel so strongly about supporting our military families, this has been a difficult week full of controversy and pain.

I read the news about a ninety-seven-year-old WWII veteran who explained why he chooses to take a knee in protest; and I have heard from many of our Gold Star families who know deeply the meaning of the our Anthem, as they watch the flag-drapped caskets of their loved ones return home.

Mostly – we want to listen. One of the best gifts received for being a part of the Wreaths Across America experience, has been learning life lessons from the people who put it all on the line, to protect our freedoms.

So we listen, and we learn from one another. There is an important conversation taking place in our Nation right now, and not the least of which, is a conversation about the values and appreciation of what it means to be an American.

So I encourage you to listen to your neighbors. And focus on what we have in common, and where we are in agreement.

We are many. We are one. We are Americans. I think that is one thing we can all agree upon. And we would like to hear what you think.

God Bless This United States of America.

[Wreaths Across America eNewsletter #151] What a difference a day makes…

From the Wreaths Across America organization.

09/19/2017 WAA eNewsletter - Weekly
Click here to read this newsletter in your browser?
What a difference a day can make…

That is the tagline we at WAA HQ talk about with our groups and locations, as they work hard in communities all across this great nation, with single minded effort to pursue the WAA mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach.
But that phrase, “what a difference a day makes…” was born out of seeing the impact that a single day, a moment in time, or even the impact one person can make in the life of another human being.
In just one moment, a life can be shattered, with the news of a loved one lost in a faraway land. This week, watching the PBS special The Vietnam War has brought back many memories, for me and the generations of families impacted when our men and women march off to war.
My challenge to you, is to think about where you could make one small difference, in the life of another. Choose a local veteran – they certainly deserve our upmost respect. However you decide to take action, know that in one day, in one moment, and being just one person… you can make a difference, and more than you might ever know.

This week we prayed for our neighbors on the islands and along our southern coasts. And yesterday we prayed for those we lost, and the families and friends left behind the tragic events of 9/11.

We remember people like this man, Rick Rescorla and the many co-workers who responded that terrible day, with kindness and selflessness.
Please take care of your neighbors out there. Someone is fighting a good fight. Someone is missing a loved one, away and serving, or having made the ultimate sacrifice.
In the coming months, many of our die hard volunteers – are going to need our help. They work tirelessly to honor all those who serve, in each of their local communities. Please make sure you sign up and invite a friend, to join you and volunteer at one of our many participating locations.

Having had our own brush with fire on the land where the wreaths come from – we so appreciate all the volunteers who pitch in on a moment’s notice, and work long after others have gone home.
