Learn how the Poppy Campaign is supporting Veterans’ health
September 2023
We’re here for their wellbeing The Legion is proud to back crucial initiatives in support of Veterans’ health and wellbeing. From funding support programs to creating safe spaces where Veterans can share their experiences with one another, we work tirelessly to ensure Veterans and their families have access to the resources they need to thrive. With the Poppy Campaign fast approaching, there will be countless ways you can give back to Canada’s Veterans. Whether you volunteer, donate to the Campaign or raise awareness about Veterans’ needs, there’s something everyone can contribute this fall.
How the Poppy Fund is changing lives for Veterans with PTSD Since 2015, Brenda Boomhouer’s Vet to Vet has helped dozens of Veterans annually who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. Through weekends of camaraderie, fishing and healing, the project brings Veterans and their families together to share their experiences and discuss coping strategies with one another to help them feel less alone. Originally funded through selling cookies, Vet to Vet is now fully funded by multiple Royal Canadian Legion Branches through the Poppy Campaign. Veterans who attend have no costs associated with attending, all their meals are free, lodging is free, they are provided with all the fishing rods, tackle, hats, t‑shirts, a welcome bag of goodies, and transportation is provided to those who need it. Volunteer with the Legion’s Poppy Campaign! The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign runs October 27 through November 11. Branches are gearing up to bring millions of Poppies to Canadians across the country. We invite and encourage all Legion members to help out with this most special time of the year. There are many ways to volunteer, from distributing Poppies in your community, to helping coordinate Remembrance Day Ceremonies, and more. Reach out to your local Legion Branch to see how you can get involved! Contact your Branch ‣
Honour and remember Veterans through the Virtual Wall of Honour and Remembrance As a way to honour and remember relatives and friends who have served Canada, Canadians are invited to submit a photograph of a deceased Veteran to be included in the Virtual Wall of Honour and Remembrance video. Photos submitted before October 20th will be included in the montage displayed on large video screens near the National War Memorial prior to the start of the 2023 National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa. Sharing the love for some of our Legion volunteers We love to hear from members like you! Here are some messages we’ve received recently from members celebrating their fellow Legionnaires.
“Our secretary for our branch Auclair 121 in Otterburn Park, Québec is invaluable. Debbie Hanney’s generous time contributed to our legion work is incredible. From the regular responsibilities of minute taking to her many lists for all our activities. She is the list master. Her spirits are uplifting and we always appreciate her enthusiasm. Our legion would not function like a well oiled machine it is if it wasn’t for her. Thank you Debbie for everything you do!” From all of us, thank you Debbie!
“As a NEW member, I would like to give a ‘shout out’ to the wonderful staff and volunteers @ our local Branch 129 in Haliburton. Mike has been working hard to offer a variety of musical events – many genres offer a little something for any age. Great homemade food is made by Cheryl with a smile as she’s serving it up. If things get busy, Della is ready to help. Cheryl did some gardening planting this year to spruce things up outside. I know there are many volunteers who are there to give a hand when needed; I may not know your names, but THANK YOU – you are appreciated. Many hands make light work and this all goes to support our Veterans. Thank you Branch 129 and keep up the good work.” Thank you, Mike, Cheryl, Della and all the staff and volunteers at Branch 129!

Strengthening the next generation of leaders Earlier this month, more than 250 Legionnaires and community volunteers helped bring The Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships to Sherbrooke, Quebec! Over 900 young Canadian athletes competed for medals in Canada’s only track and field championships for the under-16 and under-18 categories. Through our commitment to supporting youth leadership and sports, the Legion is helping strengthen the next generation of leaders. This year, we were honoured to have Invictus gold medalist and retired military Veteran Michael Trauner as the first-ever Games Ambassador. Mike lost both his legs and endured related injuries while serving in Afghanistan, but used the power of sport to change his life. As Games Ambassador, Mike is now inspiring a generation of young athletes to pursue their dreams. Congratulations to all of the athletes taking home a medal! And everyone who participated in Legion Nationals, we hope you are bringing home memories to last a lifetime!
Amherst, NS Branch honours Veterans who served in Afghanistan Legion Branch 10 in Amherst, NS will be displaying a reproduction of “Portraits of Honour” at their Branch during Legion Week from September 21–24, 2023. “Portraits of Honour” is an oil painting on canvas that stretches 40ft wide and 10ft high, and features the 158 Canadian Soldiers, Sailors, and Aircrew who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Branch member Terri will be visiting local high schools to educate students on this beautiful painting. On the Saturday, the Branch will unveil a new Afghanistan War Memorial, a project proudly led by the Branch.
(Photo: Matt Betts/CambridgeToday) Galt Legion’s student volunteer program offers way to give back The Galt Legion is giving back to its community and educating younger generations on the importance of honouring the service of Veterans by offering volunteer opportunities to high school students that fulfil their community service hours. “By educating the kids it teaches them to be a part of the community. I hope they take away a sense of responsibility and pride,” says Galt Legion President Yvonne Power. In addition to learning about the importance of the Legion, Remembrance and giving back to the community, the youth volunteers help the Branch by cutting grass, washing dishes and assisting with events. This Canada Day, remember the sacrifices of the Newfoundland Regiment For many, Canada Day is a day of celebration. However, in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is a solemn day of remembrance. On July 1, 1916, 22 officers and 758 other ranks of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were directly involved in a frontal attack near the village of Beaumont‑Hamel, France during the First World War. Of these, all the officers and 658 other ranks became casualties. Less than 68 soldiers were available for roll call the next day. Learn more about the Battle of Beaumont‑Hamel, and take a moment on July 1st to honour, thank and remember the sacrifices of the men of the Newfoundland Regiment.
