Strengthening the next generation of leaders
Earlier this month, more than 250 Legionnaires and community volunteers helped bring The Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships to Sherbrooke, Quebec! Over 900 young Canadian athletes competed for medals in Canada’s only track and field championships for the under-16 and under-18 categories. Through our commitment to supporting youth leadership and sports, the Legion is helping strengthen the next generation of leaders.
This year, we were honoured to have Invictus gold medalist and retired military Veteran Michael Trauner as the first-ever Games Ambassador. Mike lost both his legs and endured related injuries while serving in Afghanistan, but used the power of sport to change his life. As Games Ambassador, Mike is now inspiring a generation of young athletes to pursue their dreams.
Congratulations to all of the athletes taking home a medal! And everyone who participated in Legion Nationals, we hope you are bringing home memories to last a lifetime!

Galt Legion’s student volunteer program offers way to give back
The Galt Legion is giving back to its community and educating younger generations on the importance of honouring the service of Veterans by offering volunteer opportunities to high school students that fulfil their community service hours.
“By educating the kids it teaches them to be a part of the community. I hope they take away a sense of responsibility and pride,” says Galt Legion President Yvonne Power.
In addition to learning about the importance of the Legion, Remembrance and giving back to the community, the youth volunteers help the Branch by cutting grass, washing dishes and assisting with events.

This Canada Day, remember the sacrifices of the Newfoundland Regiment
For many, Canada Day is a day of celebration. However, in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is a solemn day of remembrance.
On July 1, 1916, 22 officers and 758 other ranks of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were directly involved in a frontal attack near the village of Beaumont‑Hamel, France during the First World War. Of these, all the officers and 658 other ranks became casualties. Less than 68 soldiers were available for roll call the next day.
Learn more about the Battle of Beaumont‑Hamel, and take a moment on July 1st to honour, thank and remember the sacrifices of the men of the Newfoundland Regiment.

Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships
Through the efforts of thousands of Legion volunteers, The Royal Canadian Legion has been organizing and coordinating the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships for 44 years in support of Canadian youth and our communities.
The world-class competition grew from Legionnaires’ support and promotion of youth sports as a healthy activity to help children whose fathers or mothers were serving abroad or had served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Today, the Legion Nationals has become the only premiere nationwide competition for U16 and U18 athletes.

Share the story of a 907 km trek for Veterans

The Legion’s National Headquarters is proud to release A Ruck to Remember, a video story highlighting the extensive hiking and fundraising journey taken by three men in support of the Legion’s Operation: Leave the Streets Behind program – the Ontario division.
Watch video on youtube.
Ruck to Remember founder Lino DiJulio speaks about the help available to Veterans at local Legion Branches, and the importance of getting involved with your local Legion.
“There are a lot of well-meaning people in these Branches who have a huge heart for Veterans; they cannot help a generation of people they do not have access to. If you want the Legion to help you, they want to help you, but you’ve got to engage, you’ve got to be present.”
We encourage all Branches to share this video with your members and the public.
Special thanks to Ontario Command and the Owen Sound Branch for their great assistance and participation in the production of the story.
