New Legion Veterans Village social infrastructure project officially opened BC/Yukon Command ushered in a new era with the grand opening of Legion Veterans Village in Surrey, BC! The $312 million project includes the Whalley Legion Branch, a Centre of Clinical Excellence in Veteran and first responder health, and 91 units of affordable housing. Branch members Paul (Trapper) Cane and Don Koehler have assembled and catalogued artifacts dating back to the Fenian raids of 1870 and the Boer War of 1899 to 1902. Their goal is to tell the stories of the people. “You never finish,” says Koehler, speaking of the museum’s continuing work to recover the stories of the past and incorporate the stories of today. Read more  ‣ Buddy Check Coffee coming to Napanee Legion Legion Branch 137 in Napanee, Ontario is launching a new program in February aimed at getting Veterans out of the house and meeting with peers to chat over a cup of java. Known as Buddy Check Coffee, this Legion peer program is open to all members of the military, past or present, and encourages Veterans to network with peers and share stories and experiences. The Legion comments on last year’s unspent VAC funding The Legion was surprised and concerned to learn that Veterans Affairs Canada didn’t spend nearly $1 billion of its budget last year. When asked for his views by media, Dominion President Bruce Julian stated that if this funding “remains available” in future years as reported, the Legion would like to know that it will not replace additional funding. Unused funds should be re-routed to completely eliminate the disability claims backlog – something that is taking way too long. November 2022 Thank you for everything you do for Canada’s Veterans The Poppy Campaign is one of the Legion’s most important initiatives, and its success is only possible because of members like you. We would like to thank you for your support during this year’s Poppy Campaign, for participating in Remembrance Day activities, and for your ongoing support of Canada’s Veterans and their families. The flag represents the story of a journey that crossed generations, through friend and foe and across great distances, over several countries and two continents, to return home. Learn more  ‣ Celebrating our Legion Volunteers Every donation to the Poppy Fund goes directly to helping Canadian Veterans and their families. We were beyond moved to hear from one such family, reaching out to thank our volunteers from over 60 years ago! Second World War Veteran Emil Karp, and his wife Norma Saari (Karp), remember how Legion volunteers came to their family’s aid over 60 years ago. Their daughter Judy recently wrote to the Legion, recalling how the Legion and “Poppy Fund people” helped their family through a pivotal time: “The ‘Poppy Fund people’ were the most supportive of anyone who helped her out. It was the Legion who came to drive her to appointments or to visit Dad in hospital [with cancer]. Many times, they would arrive with a bag or two of groceries in their arms. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Organizational Assessment  Town Hall Meeting With Monday, September 19th declared a National Day of Mourning, Legion National Headquarters has postponed the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Town Hall Meeting to the dates outlined below. Members are invited to join the Legion for a live Town Hall event intended to update members and gather input to inform a study of EDI at the Legion, and evaluate our organization’s effectiveness in high quality programs and services that are accessible to all its members, volunteers, and stakeholders in an equitable and inclusive manner. The Town hall will be facilitated by StrategyCorp, a third-party advisory firm and will be held virtually. To accommodate different time zones, three meeting time options are available.
