There’s a NEW Special Edition Christmas Tommy

An item from the organization formerly known at There But Not There.

Let us take you back in time.

Introducing our New Special Edition Tommy: Tommy United

To commemorate the brave soldiers who came together on Christmas Day in 1914, RBLI are launching a new, special edition Tommy: Tommy United.

In 1914, British and German troops formed a truce like no other in the history of modern warfare, putting their differences aside and coming together for a game of football on Christmas Day.

Tommy United symbolises the togetherness and unity that can be found in times of adversity. This Christmas, put your Tommy in the Window to show your support.

Being fulfilled by veterans, every sale of Tommy United directly contributes to the employment and support of veterans, who need us now more than ever.

The Christmas Truce

It’s Christmas Eve, 1914 in Ploegsteert, Belgium. The weather on the Western Front is a vile combination of bitterly cold winds, freezing temperatures, heavy rain and snow. The trenches are filled with deep mud, and trench foot is prevalent amongst the men on the front line. Morale is at an all time low. Stuck waiting on the front line with no guarantee of a safe return, British troops are longing to be home with their families.

Just a hundred yards away, German troops are experiencing the same hardship and fatigue; them too yearning for home comforts and a Christmas with their families.

Over the days prior, many areas along the trench lines had become quiet. The faint sounds of German Christmas carols could be heard from the British lines, who replied with British carols and words of Christmas wishes.

The clock strikes midnight, it’s Christmas Day. British troops are exchanging words of warm wishes and hope of a safe return, when the words ‘Merry Christmas Tommy’ are heard from the German Trenches.

What happened next was a unofficial truce like no other in modern warfare. British and German troops met in the middle of ‘no man’s land’. They shook hands and exchanged gifts, taking photos and singing carols.

Most famously, the brave soldiers from both sides played a game of football together. Despite the bitter conflict that had happened in the months prior, both sides united on Christmas Day, with their differences in war set aside.

Albert Wyatt, a young Corporal serving in A Company, 1st Battalion, The Norfolk Regiment recalls the events of Christmas Day in the trenches from first-hand experience, stating “we finished up… kicking a football about between the two firing lines. So football in the firing lines between the British and the Germans is the truth, as I was one that played.”

Five years on from 1914, Royal British Legion Industries was established to help wounded, injured and sick ex-Forces (Tommies), returning from the World War One. RBLI has a proud 100 year heritage as a leading military charity, helping to improve the lives of those who sacrificed so much.

Today, we are dealing with another kind of battle. Our focus has shifted from helping injured veterans from WW1 and WW2 to supporting today’s veterans in employment, housing and mental health. We have developed a far greater understanding of PTSD and mental health issues within ex-Forces community, and realise that this a very prevalent, growing issue.

Please help us support the veterans of today by putting Tommy United in your window this Christmas.

Hi ,

We know that 2020 has been an incredibly tough year for everybody, so we just wanted to let you know about the incredible difference you have made.

The support we have received this year from our customers, fundraisers and Tommy Club Champions has helped ensure that during these unprecedented times, we have not needed to reduce or cut any of our services at RBLI this year. So on behalf of our veterans and people with disabilities who we support, THANK YOU.

Our Tommy Champions!

As it has been for so many, this year has been ‘one hell of a year’ for our Tommy 10k and Tommy Club champion Lisa. The first national lockdown coincided with the breakdown of her 24 year relationship and the sad loss of her uncle.

As part of the fundraising challenge, and alongside neighbour, friend and biggest cheerleader Alison, they ran trails with conditions that were close to what our Armed Forces may have faced.  ‘We even ran my longest ever run (8.5 miles / 12.5 km) at night!  That was so much fun! Said Lisa.

‘I have been completing personal challenges every month since May in order to keep my focus on something positive. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Tommy 10k has been the most positive experience of them all. Our #Tommyfamily has been amazing and I have loved being part of it. Thank you all for the incredible support, it has helped me more than you will ever know.’

Lisa has been sharing her fundraising journey with community Facebook pages in her area. Almost one third of her incredible £1131 raised has come from community members on these groups – people that she has never met before. She even managed to meet up with a fellow Tommy10k runner, who works in the same town! (Socially distanced of course!)

Everyone at RBLI would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to Lisa and all of our Tommy 10k supporters. This challenge has made RBLI history and we are in awe of the encouragement and kindness shown to one another. They have created a Community which will go on long after the challenge finishes.

We Will Remember Them

Another update from the folks formerly known as There But Not There.

The Act of Remembrance

As guardians of Remembrance we are committed to honouring the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces personnel, past, present and future.  We look forward to the day when we can join together again in future Remembrance events and hope this will be possible in the not-too-distant future.

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

We will remember them.”

Remembering Charles

Today we celebrate the life of D-Day veteran and Queen Elizabeth Court resident, Charles Boyer, who sadly passed away this year aged 94.

Charles first moved to RBLI’s village in 2017 following the passing of his wife and soon became an iconic figure across our Aylesford Village. Charles was given the duty, and honour, of speaking in front of Her Majesty the Queen during her visit to RBLI in November 2019, as pictured.

Charles joined the Royal Norfolk Regiment in December 1942, aged 16 years and 11 months, but lied about his age and added a year to become 17 years and 11 months old in order to join the military early. His military records still listed him as 95 years old at the time of his death.

6 June 1944 marked the beginning of the Normandy Landings, also known as D-Day. As many as 14,000 soldiers lost their lives over the following days. Charles was there on that monumental day arriving on Sword Beach at around 12 o’clock.

In 2019 as part of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day commemorations, Charles recalled the journey across the channel to Sword Beach:

“All I remember is that it was rough. You couldn’t believe the noise, when you think, there was about 4,000 ships going over and how many aeroplanes.

“All we could see was beach and hill. All we were told was ‘run’. Just run across the beach as fast as you can.

“We were told we’d be in Caen by the evening. It took us six weeks.

“I was proud to be there, it changed my life.”

Charles was awarded the Legion d’Honneur, the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits for his actions on Sword Beach, D-Day 1944. Charles has left a lasting legacy at RBLI and will be sorely missed by the entire team at RBLI.

So today, on Remembrance Sunday, we remember Charles Boyer.

Father, Husband, Hero.
