| For you before Remembrance

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

Hi ,

Yesterday, the 6th of November, marks one year since Her Majesty the Queen visited our Village. It was such a special day, and an incredible honour to welcome her to our Village. Her Majesty launched the second phase of RBLI’s Centenary Village project – a £22m development which will provide a home to hundreds of veterans every year for the next century.

It’s a little different on the Village today, much quieter, but we will hold onto our memories until we meet again.

This Week on the RBLI Village

Steve’s Lockdown Baking!

Steve, who lives in Mountbatten Pavilion has been busy making bread thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund who kindly funded baking boxes for RBLI’s village. By the looks of it, Steve has nailed it! New career path maybe..?
There’s certainly no *loafing* around here!

…..(we’ll show ourselves out!)

George’s Mission to keep the Village Fit

Former Royal Marine, George Bradford, has been running armchair fitness classes for the residents in our assisted living accommodation, Queen Elizabeth Court, throughout the previous lockdown. With the return of lockdown, he has decided to branch out into the world of social media to help keep the nation active through the next month, even while being stuck at home!

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more from George!

Our RAF Poet is Back!

In last week’s newsletter, RAF Veteran Mark Hamill’s beautiful Remembrance poem was featured. Upon popular request, here is another of his poems.
Silence
They marched in silence, their heads held high,
Not seen by the thousands standing by.
They marched with friends, comrades all.
They marched like when they took the call.

They marched with those from yesterday, in sorrow,
For they cannot march with those of tomorrow.
Their eyes see only long gone scenes;
They only hear the battle screams.

They would be old but they march as youth.
What they were once, ’tis the truth!
They walk as men and women too,
Brave? No, just folk like me and you.

So when you stand on Remembrance Day,
Heads bowed and you softly say.
“You have come from close by and faraway
But please; can I march with you today?”

You gave everything you had to give
So that we in harmony could live.
So come with us as we observe
With honour, those that gave and served.

Lest We Forget.

have you got your Tommy for Remembrance?

An item from the organization formerly known as There But Not There.

Hi

Many of us have a personal link to the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefields of the First World War. Next week, the nation will fall silent to pay its respects and remember all who’s lives have been lost serving their country, from the Great War to the currently serving generation of brave men and women.

A Word from Our Tommy Club President

We are proud to introduce our President of the Tommy Club, General The Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL.

A soldier for forty years, Lord Dannatt concluded his military career as Chief of the General Staff. Since retiring from active duty in 2009, he has continued to be a champion for Armed Forces veterans.

“I want to do all I can to keep our Armed Forces veterans top of mind. I am deeply concerned about their ongoing needs and their mental health. What we can do together in Tommy Club is much greater than anything we could possibly achieve alone and everyone who is a part of the new Tommy Club is helping veterans in their moment of need.”

Joan has an Important Reminder for All

Joan Edwards joined the RAF in 1942 and became a Leading Aircraftwoman, repairing planes returning from conflict. Joan met her husband while he was also serving in the RAF as an electrical engineer.
“My step-father was an engineer in the First World War. He was still having great trouble from having been gassed during the war. I just knew at the end of the second, he didn’t want any more war. People should consider themselves lucky living in times of peace.”

Joan, now 96 years old, moved into our assisted living accommodation, Queen Elizabeth Court, in 2015 after she had a fall while chasing off a burglar at her home – she was 90 years old at the time!

There’s still time to order a Tommy before Remembrance!

We are so grateful for the immense support we have had for the RBLI shop in the run up to Remembrance. This support has fueled the need for more Veterans fulfilling the orders, in turn creating jobs for those who need them.

And Finally, a Remembrance Poem

Mike Hamill, RAF Veteran has written an incredible Remembrance poem which he has shared with us. We thought it was too good not to share with you.

The old men gather between hallowed walls,
On village greens and in lofty,  grandeured halls.

They speak in whispers, their eyes and voices dim
They meet with comrades, friends, each one a pilgrim.

There was laughter and banter ‘tween opposing groups
Individually they carried their colours; but together they were troops.

Boys to men, they’d come of age when needed by their land,
Marching proudly; behind their chosen band.

And now these men, with bodies bent, all answer a greater call.
For men and women no longer here. But family all.

To come together, and remember the cause.
The men in scarlet lead, to echoing applause

And then, came the quiet command, “Parade!”
And bent backs and broken limbs each, an effort made.

Standing tall and straight, a tear falls here and there.
But everyone there that day, did their poppy proudly wear.

As they remembered, those who no longer live.
But gave us everything, that they had left to give.

Hi

Our Veterans need Your Support

On the 13th October we launched our new and exciting veterans support club.
Joining us to mark the occasion were Founding Patrons – Antiques Roadtrip regular Raj Bisram, and double Olympic champion Heather Stanning OBE – and a giant (almost 10ft!) Tommy in our Garden of Honour to mark the occasion.
For just £15 a year you can join the Tommy Club and become a Tommy Club Champion. You will be helping to change lives with every penny you raise as a Tommy Club Champion, including your annual subscription, directly supporting veterans with their practical and emotional needs.

In return you will receive exclusive Tommy Club benefits, including your welcome pack with collectable Tommy pin, bi-annual magazine and discounts in the RBLI shop.

A Note to You from a Founding Patron…

“With such a long family history of military service, RBLI’s important work is close to my heart. The military community has always rallied around each other at times of need, and now it’s the nation’s turn to do the same.

Tommy Club, and Tommy Champions across the UK, will ensure vulnerable veterans of all ages will receive the support they need for years to come.”

Tommy Club Founding Patron
TV explorer and Reservist British Army Officer, Levison Wood

In Remembrance

“This year marks 10 years since our friend, Smudge, was killed in Afghanistan during my husband’s first tour.

“Usually on Remembrance Sunday I stand with pride and tears in my eyes as I watch my husband on parade, dressed in his smart uniform. Every year I have a lump in my throat as I watch him march up to the memorial, lay a cross for Smudge and salute.

“This year I may not be able to watch my husband lay his cross, but we will stand Tommy in our window proudly for everyone to see. This is for Smudge.

“In honour of Sapper Mark ‘Smudge’ Smith. Killed in action. 26th July 2010. Aged 26.”

The Inspirational Work of Our Supporters

We are so grateful for our supporters showing the true Tommy spirit. This morning we received this wonderful picture from Emma, showing her little Tommy saluting the big Tommy!

Little Tommy is proving to be quite the supporter, acting as Chief Fundraising Mascot while Emma takes on our Special Forces Tommy 10k challenge!
Emma’s already managed to raise £150!

Are you ready to join the Tommy Club?

Hi

Today, the former Head of the British Army and Founding President of the Tommy Club Lord Richard Dannatt calls on you, to join his new veterans’ support club.

The Tommy Club will ensure the stories of yesterday are shared with the next generation, and those heroes who risked their lives in conflict for our precious freedoms are looked after for many years to come. Together, we will raise crucial funds for ex-servicemen and women and help them into work.

JOIN THE TOMMY CLUB

Improving the Lives of our Nation’s Heroes

There has never been a more important time for us to commit our support to the veterans of today and make certain that we can be here for them for decades to come.

From elderly WW2 heroes who risked their lives to win us our precious freedoms, to the young ex-servicemen and women who suffered devastating injuries and trauma during more recent conflicts, we want to be here for them in their moment of need.

And it’s you, together with fellow Tommy Club Champions from all over this country, who can make this happen. Together we can ensure these heroes are never isolated and never left behind.

That means by becoming a Tommy Club Champion, you not only raise crucial funds to provide homes and crucial welfare support to our nation’s heroes but also provide them with the rewarding employment opportunities they need to lead fulfilling independent lives. Tommy is saving veterans’ lives today.

The Inspirational Work of Tommy Club Supporters

We are so grateful for our Tommy Club supporters showing the true Tommy spirit. As part of our recent ‘Tommy Tea’ fundraising event, Stephen Shaw from Southampton created and delivered 77 individual tea and sandwich parcels to armed forces veterans living alone in his local area. A tea time Zoom event was hosted to unite the local veterans – no one need have their tea alone. Stephen was even kind enough to give each veteran their very own Tommy Pin in their parcels; what a shining example of a Tommy Club supporter!

Wouldn’t you like to be part of such an amazing, supporting community?
