Hello Friend
A Festive Update from RBLI
It is almost the end of another year filled with challenges but, with your ongoing support and the help of our amazing community, we have been able to overcome all that was thrown our way and have helped hundreds more veterans.

Our priority project, the Centenary Village, is progressing fantastically. Thanks to your continued efforts, we have now raised £19m of the £22m target to provide homes and facilities for many more veterans. With new assisted living and family housing set for completion in June, we are well on the way but we are still in need of your help to raise funds so we can build the community centre and further accommodation.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will take place in 2022 and we will mark the occasion with a number of exciting initiatives, as we will when we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands.

Lots to look ahead to next year and we look forward to seeing you all then but, in the meantime, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at RBLI
“LIFEWORKS SHOWED ME THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.”

Every veteran’s story is unique and the struggles many of them face can make it very difficult to find employment outside of the Armed Forces. Our dedicated Lifeworks team work solidly to make this transition that bit easier for veterans like Jeff.

Jeff struggled to re-adjust to life outside of the Armed forces and, after leaving the Army in 2003, alcohol started to impact dramatically on his life leading to him losing his driving license, his job and struggling to maintain personal relationships.

Completing the Lifeworks course helped Jeff gain the skills and confidence he needed to get back into work and he quickly found a job where he is doing fantastically to get his life back on track.

Leyton Orient Auction 3 Unknown Tommy Statues
Leyton Orient has launched the auction of 3 Unknown Tommy statues that commemorate the 3 Clapton Orient players who lost their lives in WW1. These statues were created especially for a Remembrance ceremony that took place before kick-off at the Hartlepool match on 30th October.

Produced by our veterans at BBMC, the statues commemorate the lives of Private William Jonas, Sergeant Major Richard McFadden and Private George Scott and you can now bid to own these with starting bids of £175. All proceeds are being donated directly to the O’s home shirt charity partner and our very own, Tommy Club.

Hello Friend
Thank you for your support this month
We just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all of you for the incredible support we have had over past month or so.

There were 12 amazing Tommy Club Champions volunteering at our momentous Lambeth Palace event this month, some of whom were present the very next day to help us at the Leyton Orient Remembrance match. A special thanks to all involved in these and all events we have been involved in over the past couple of months; we couldn’t do it without you.

Altogether you raised almost £5,000 for our nation’s heroes and introduced a whole new group of Champions to the Tommy Club!

The race starts just off The Strand, next to the infamous Trafalgar Square, and runners will pass landmarks including St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, Monument and the Tower of London and then be rewarded with a stately finish on Whitehall just outside Downing Street.

Hello Friend
RBLI Village Remembers
On the 11th November, RBLI staff, residents and guests joined together for the village Remembrance service. Held in the Garden of Honour, the moving service was lead by Aylesford Church vicar Ruth Peet with a series of readings and prayers to honour those lost in conflict and those living with the effects of war.

We will remember them

For the Fallen
by Laurence Binyon
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

An extract from the book, ‘Remembering’ by Peter Ketley
REMEMBERING. P82-83, The Battle for Darwin and Goose Green, 27 May 1982.

Besides the shock of losing the Commanding Officer, I had lost two good friends, both excellent officers. They had both been killed, along with Cpl David Hardman, immediately prior to the COs lone attack, for which he would be awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. Chris Dent, the 2 i/c of A Coy was a gentle giant of a man, liked by everyone. His death was a double tragedy. Before joining 2 Para we had served together at Depot Para. Chris had become a father just six months earlier and while we were on pre-Belize leave, he and his wife Cathy had gone to Australia to visit Chris’s parents. Cathy and their son had remained in Australia to stay with the family, while Chris spent the next six months in Belize. They never had a proper farewell.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support for RBLI.
