Members of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) recently stood at attention in full dress uniform, despite the sweltering heat, to honour the pilots who fought and died during the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain wasn’t so much a battle as it was a three-month onslaught, where British and Canadian pilots fought off an aerial invasion by the German air force, the “Luftwaffe,” beginning in the summer of 1940. The Royal Canadian Air Force Association Wing 424 has held an annual ceremony to honour the pilots who died trying to keep the Luftwaffe from crossing the English Channel 77 years ago. READ MORE

Although he hasn’t at this point reversed the decision of previous Canadian governments not to become involved in the U.S. ground-based missile defence system, news media outlets point out he opened the door, albeit a little, when he acknowledged his government will look at how to deal the situation with North Korea’s missiles. A United Nations peacekeeping force populated with Canadians may, in the estimation of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, be the “shortest way” to end fighting in his troubled land, but his determination to exclude Russia could make for a long, uncertain road. Recently, the ownership of Lancaster bomber KB882 officially changed hands from from the City of Edmundston, N.B. to the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton. The Royal Canadian Air Force has started to dismantle the aircraft to prepare for its transport to its new home in Quinte West. In a media release, the RCAF indicated KB882 symbolizes the more than 50,000 Canadians who served in Bomber Command during the Second World War and nearly 10,000 who died. READ MORE

A body found in a Second World War plane that crashed in India could be a Peterborough man who went missing in 1944. The late Clare Pymer McWilliams was a wireless operator and air gunner in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He was declared missing on June 1, 1944, when his RAF 117 Squadron Dakota aircraft didn’t return to India after a supply-dropping operation over Burma. He was 23. READ MORE

On Aug. 17, 1917, South African General Jan Smuts presented a report to the British government’s War Council setting out his ideas on the future of air power. The report was duly approved and led to the formation of the world’s first air force being born on the April 1, 1918. The Royal Air Force (RAF) was formed by the amalgamation of the squadrons and military personnel of the British Army’s “Royal Flying Corps” (RFC) with the Royal Navy’s “Royal Naval Air Service” (RNAS). On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, in collaboration with the Royal Military College, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is honoured to present the Birchall Leadership Award to Colonel (Retired) Chris Hadfield, OC, OOnt, MSC, CD. Colonel Hadfield was the first Canadian to walk in space. A Royal Military College graduate, an engineer, and former Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) fighter pilot, Colonel Hadfield has flown two space shuttle missions and served as Commander of the International Space Station.
