Hello

Let’s Commemorate and Remember VJ Day Together

The 15th of August marks the anniversary of the Allies Victory over Japan Day, a key milestone which ultimately led to the end of World War Two.

Over 70,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers are estimated to have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the war against Japan. For many, VJ Day symbolises the end of a long period of suffering and unrest.

At midnight on August 15th 1945, the new British Prime Minister Clement Atlee announced the news, stating “The last of our enemies is laid low”.

In the two days of national holiday following VJ Day, millions of people from the allied countries participated in street parties, parades and celebrations, although events were tinged with sadness due to the catastrophic loss of life in the War.

Support the veterans of today by remembering VJ Day

At RBLI, we believe that it is incredibly important to remember history, and the sacrifices made by generations before us. Our veterans at Britains Bravest Manufacturing Company have therefore produced a new 2021 range of VJ Day products to help the nation commemorate this important day.

As well as providing vital employment to veterans and those with disabilities, all proceeds from each sale help RBLI to support today’s veterans.

Thinking of going back to school after your military career? Consider the Education and Training Benefit

The Education and Training Benefit can be a part of your successful transition to life after service. It provides financial support to achieve your education and training goals. This is a great way to round out the skills you developed during your service with the Canadian Armed Forces.

You can use this benefit for:

•        a full-length program toward a diploma, degree, or certificate

•        training that leads to a certification or designation

•        short courses for career and personal development.

The Education and Training Benefit is taxable, and once you’ve finished your education or training, you can apply for a $1,000 completion bonus.

Applying is easy. You can follow the guided form in My VAC Account, a secure online portal, or download the form and send it in by mail.

Visit veterans.gc.ca for more information about the Education and Training Benefit, including how to qualify and getting started with the application.

PTSD Coach Canada: mobile app can help you learn about and manage symptoms of PTSD.

HighRes: Developed by Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the HighRes app can help still-serving members, Veterans and their families build their resilience and mental fitness. The app contains easy-to-use tools to help set goals and practice skills.

Veteran success story

Melanie St-Jean: Finding the missing link after service

Melanie (Mel) St-Jean followed her dreams to a successful military career. By many measures, as a mother and independent business owner, she also had success in life after service. Still, this Army and Navy Veteran felt something was missing. Reconnecting with military Veterans has empowered Mel to pursue new dreams.

Read Mel’s full story.

We’re stronger thanks to the Veteran Family Program

Life after service isn’t always easy. Jo Anne Truskoski and her husband Michael are no strangers to the challenges a military family can face.

Michael is a 35-year Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. He released for medical reasons in 2012, and suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other health challenges.

In 2018, the Veteran Family Program, the local Military Family Resource Centre, and Louise, their Veteran Family Program Coordinator, stepped up to help.

Thanks to this continuing support, Jo Anne and Michael participated in a Mental Health First Aid course as well as the Couples Overcoming PTSD Everyday (COPE) program, designed to help couples overcome the effects of PTSD.

For those who may be on the fence about contacting the Veteran Family Program, Jo Anne has the following advice: “Stop thinking about it and do it… you will be glad you did!”

August 9 is National Peacekeepers’ Day

Peacekeeping is an important part of our country’s military tradition—and our Canadian identity.

More than 125,000 Canadians have served in peace missions around the world.

Peacekeeping is difficult and demanding. From patrolling buffer zones to protecting refugees, our peacekeepers face situations and challenges that would be unimaginable to many of us at home.

On August 9, let’s take a moment to thank our country’s peacekeepers who sacrifice so much to help make the world a better place.

A glimmer of hope for Afghan interpreters left behind

A glimmer of hope for Afghan interpreters left behind

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has profound implications for more than 100 Afghans believed to have worked alongside Canadian troops during the years they operated inside the country’s borders.

The American pullout has refocused attention on the plight of an estimated 115 so-called LECs (locally employed civilians) who missed out on a brief resettlement program instituted by the former Conservative government.

Jerry Potts and the March West

Story by Sharon Adams

In September 1874, a North West Mounted Police patrol heading west to Fort Whoop-Up to rein in the violence of the whiskey trade, hired Métis scout and interpreter Jerry Potts.

For the next 22 years he was an invaluable asset to the force, arguably as responsible for the peaceful settlement of the West as the Mounties he served.

Portraits of Prince Phillip
With the passing of His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, we received questions on whether Branches should remove the portrait of HRH. A representative from the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada (OSGG) indicated that, as HRH was not the Monarch, there are no guidelines for removal or replacement. It is at the discretion of the organization when to remove the portrait. At this time, the OSGG has chosen not to remove the portrait, and indicated there would be no breach of protocol to simply leave the portrait as is.
Historically, the last time the consort of a reigning Sovereign died was 1861, the Prince Consort, Albert. For Government Houses around the then Empire, his portraits were gradually removed to less prominent places over the year following his death.

Branch 25 – 90th Anniversary Picnic

After almost 18 months of virtual events, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 representing the San Francisco Bay Area is hosting a picnic to celebrate the 90th anniversary.  Chartered on 12 August 1931, the San Francisco Branch is the sole remaining branch of the 13 branches that once formed the Northern Zone of the Western United States Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The picnic will be held at the Marsh Hawk picnic area in the Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline Park.  The picnic will begin around noon on Saturday, 21 August 2021

Given the variety of food preferences and dietary restrictions, attendees are asked to bring their own picnic items.  The branch will provide beverages for everyone, as well as something sweet and celebratory.

Please register at https://tinyurl.com/rcl-branch25-picnic or by calling Branch President Michael Barbour at 203-997-6330.

We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our membership, the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps – Arkansas Division, and others in the Canadian ex-pat community.

You can access the full flyer here.
