May is an awakening for so many Canadians, after a long winter. Our time to welcome sun, warmth, and plan for the May two-four weekend. Those memories never fade. Here in the Bay Area we already have the sun and the warmth (a little less in San Francisco, but still!), so I guess we just need to get the beer ready!
At the DML we are in the planning stages too: the throwback Canada Day Picnic on July 2nd is coming together. Please SAVE the DATE! Generated by sheer volunteer excitement and valued partnerships, you will get your chance to celebrate your Canadian roots this summer.
I am amazed every time I meet a “new” Canadian here how their sense of pride shines bright. It is that force that keeps this volunteer board engaged. We are looking forward to spring and summer activities and to hearing the stories of your travels “back home” – for many, it will be the first time in years.

The Digital Moose Lounge throwback CANADA DAY PICNIC in the park! We can’t wait to re-establish our roots with new and old friends in the SF Bay Area. We will even have our own Digital Moose and Mountie in attendance! Enjoy a tasty BBQ, cold drinks at the bar, wine tasting, trivia, family-friendly games, crafts, prizes and surprises!

Linden Tree Books in Los Altos supports Canadian authors!
Local writer, Jocelyn Watkinson (a Canadian living in the Bay Area) is about to launch her children’s picture book, The Three Canadian Pigs: A Hockey Story!
The three pigs are just finishing up a hockey practice session when the Big Bad Wolf drops by and declares them Canadian bacon–and lunch. When north country bad boys Bear and Moose join the fray, the pigs invite the gang to settle their disputes The Canadian Way–with a rousing game of hockey. Will the big guys overtake the pigs with brute force? Or will the pigs skate circles around the lumbering baddies? One thing is certain, the trial is likely to end with a meal (poutine, please!). But will the piggies be on the menu?
Linden Tree Books (with it’s own Canadian roots) is pleased to offer everyone pre-sale first access to this soon-to-be published story. Congratulations, Jocelyn!

SF Pride Parade

Join the Canadian Consulate (along with the Mexican Consulate) for the return of this much-loved parade in honour and support of the community. This year’s Pride theme is “Love Will Keep Us Together.” Watch for information closer to the event about where to meet in order to march together with friends of Canada.

LIVE IN CONCERT: Feist: Multitudes
THUR-SAT, MAY 5-7TH
Featuring all new music written and performed by Feist and accompanied by Todd Dahlhoff and Amir Yaghmai, the Canadian artist creates an intimate, radically communal, and topsy-turvy production that muddies the roles between audience and performer, observer and its subject. We are welcomed to sit back and watch, or raise our voices in collective anonymity. Anything goes.

Bay Area Book Festival
SAT, MAY 7TH & SUN, MAY 8TH (San Francisco)
You can find several writers with Canadian ties at this year’s Bay Area Book Festival:
Pik-Shuen Fung was born in Hong Kong and now lives in New York, but was raised in Vancouver.
The there’s the Governor General’s Award winning children’s author, David A. Robertson who also has a memoir and a podcast worth looking at.
And, you might also be interested to learn that writer and First Lady Eliza Reid of Iceland (a Canadian now married to Iceland’s President, who grew up in Ashton, Ontario) will be on a panel discussing the secrets of extraordinary women.

DocLands Documentary Film Festival

Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography
SAT, MAY 7TH
3 p.m.
Canadian film-maker, Niobe Thompson, will be in-person at this screening which chooses to demystify the story of carbon (so often a villain). Carbon is personified as a woman—voiced by Sarah Snook of HBO’s Succession—and serves as the film’s central narrator.

“I wanted to explore why people are so drawn to these metal graveyards around the world. What is it about an old, dilapidated 747 in the middle of Bangkok that piques our curiosity? There’s a lot to unpack there.”

…Flying to and from Canada via SFO soon? Effective Wednesday, May 11, 2022, Air Canada will move from the International Terminal to Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport. Terminal 2 will allow Air Canada customers the benefit of walking to Terminal 3 airside, allowing for smoother US domestic connections.
…Since April 1, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a pre-entry COVID-19 test result to enter Canada by air, land or water. Connect2Canada has the most current entry requirements.
