Government ignoring plight of Afghan translators in Canada: Ombudsman

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

The military ombudsman has called out the federal government for ignoring the plight of former Afghan translators who put their lives and those of their families on the line working alongside Canadian forces during 14 years of war.

In a Sept. 29, 2023, letter to Defence Minister Bill Blair, Gregory Lick said 15 of the former “language and cultural advisers” now living in Canada had contacted his office since July complaining that claims they filed with the Workers Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) have not been adequately addressed.

Petaluma Veterans Day Parade 2023

Following the Remembrance Day ceremonies at Liberty Cemetery in Petaluma, CA, the Royal Canadian Legion US Zone, Branch #25 and the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) Arkansas Division participated in the Petaluma Veterans’ Day Parade.

Petaluma proudly hosts the largest Veteran’s Day Parade north of the Golden Gate. The event is dedicated to remembering the men and women who set aside their civilian pursuits to serve our nation’s cause, defending our freedom and preserving American heritage.

Below is a series of videos stitched together from the event, followed by some images of the parade.

Remembrance Day Service 2023

Earlier today Branch 25 (San Francisco) of the Royal Canadian Legion came together with the United States Navy Sea Cadet Corp – Arkansas Division at Liberty Cemetery in Petaluma for its annual Remembrance Day service. The program for today’s service is available by clicking here.

In addition to the in person service, we also streamed the service using Zoom. You can view an edited recording of that service at:

Thank you to both those who attended in person and those who attended online. Thanks also to our fellow Canadians at the Consulate in San Francisco, the Digital Moose Lounge, and the Canadian Studies Program at UC Berkeley. We appreciate the incredible job each of these groups did in promoting the service.

Finally, below are some of the photos that were taken, including our traditional group picture.
