Civilian death toll, Russian war crimes soar in Ukraine

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

The verified civilian death toll after more than nine months of war in Ukraine was approaching 7,000 last week, with more in the process of corroboration, independent monitors reported.

In a document released Dec. 5, 2022, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights pegged the figure at 6,702, adding 10,479 civilians had been injured since Russian troops invaded the country on Feb. 24, 2022.

At least 424 of the dead were children, the office said in its monthly update.

“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, including shelling from heavy artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes,” said the report, which covered developments through the month of November.

Canadian peacekeepers challenged in the Balkans

STORY BY SHARON ADAMS

Although nearly as many Canadian military personnel served in the long and bloody civil wars in the Balkans as the 40,000 deployed to the war in Afghanistan, Canadians are much less familiar with their service and sacrifice.

In the Balkans, the Canadian Armed Forces was involved in the heaviest infantry combat since the Korean War, and the most intense air combat since the Second World War.

The CAF first went to the troubled area in 1991, shortly after the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia began to break up.

They went in as peacekeepers—but discovered there was no peace to keep.

Merry Christmas from your Legion
As the new year fast approaches, we would like to recognize the many things the Legion has accomplished in 2022 — like the return of the Legion Nationals, a growing memorial banner program, the strengthened focus on youth and Remembrance, and another successful Poppy Campaign. We deeply appreciate the countless volunteers and staff who not only keep things running smoothly, but are constantly cooking up new ideas. It’s no secret that it’s thanks to Branches like yours that we are able to serve Canada’s Veterans and families and support our communities.
On behalf of everyone at the Legion, we would like to wish you and your family Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a wonderful 2023!

Can we count on you to join us on December 17th?

Members are encouraged to attend this event at the National Cemetery at the San Francisco Presidio, followed by a no host luncheon at the Presidio Cafe.

Arlington Cemetery

 Dear Michael Barbour,

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our year long mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, is in part carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 3,600 participating locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea, and abroad. We trace our organization’s history back to a wreath-laying event held at Arlington National Cemetery in December of 1992—more than 30 years ago!—and today it has grown far beyond that small act of remembrance to become an international movement supported by hundreds of thousands of volunteers honoring the sacrifices of millions of our nation’s heroes.

Laying a live, balsam veteran’s wreath on an individual headstone for one of our fallen heroes and saying their name out loud is a unique and individual experience. It is a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy each day, and we are so proud to play a part in making sure that the legacy of duty, service, and sacrifice of each veteran is never forgotten.

Can we count on you to join us on December 17th?
