Terry Copp first visited the Normandy beaches in 1981 when researching Maple Leaf Route: Caen. Armed with the original maps and air photos, he studied the terrain, a key primary source for tactical and operational history. Copp has returned to Normandy many times since then usually leading study tours for the Canadian Battlefields Foundation, the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies and True Patriot Love. The landscape has changed dramatically over the past 40 years as a result of new construction and efforts at memorialization. Copp will talk briefly about the nature of the “Atlantic Wall” in 1944 and the problem of breaking through it, then describe the changes to the terrain especially in the ways D-Day has come to be commemorated in the Juno sector.

TERRY COPP is one of Canada’s foremost military historians. The author and co-author of over twenty published books and of numerous scholarly articles on the operations and experience of the Canadian military during the World Wars, Copp is a leading scholar of Canada’s military role in World War II and an influential advocate for military history in both military and civilian education.

War Graves Week – A week to Remember

An item from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.  Note their programming beginning on 21 May at https://www.cwgc.org/our-war-graves-your-history/war-graves-week-events/digital-festival/

Join us for War Graves Week – a week to Remember

War Graves Week • Discover • Learn • Remember
War Graves Week (21st – 28th May 2021) is our new awareness week where we are encouraging communities to come together and discover the World War heritage on their doorstep. Many of the men and women who fought and died in the two world wars came from, and are today commemorated in, your local community – lying in cemeteries or named on memorials which were built, and are maintained to this day, by the CWGC. Join us and learn more about them this War Graves Week.

For the duration of War Graves Week you can type in any UK postcode to a new search function on our website to discover service personnel with a connection to your local area.  They came from our local communities, walked on our streets, and we want you to keep their memory alive. Once you’ve found your local connection, you can download a commemorative tribute to display in your window, sign up to one of our nationwide events, or join us on our social media channels to find out more about casualties and our sites in the UK and around the world.
Click here to find who lived on your street
DISCOVER: Marking War Graves Week can be as simple as visiting your local cemetery or memorial. We commemorate service personnel at more than 23,000 locations in over 150 countries and territories, with more than 300,000 casualties commemorated in the UK alone, so there is more than likely a Commonwealth war grave on your doorstep. To find your nearest war grave, you can download our newly updated app which is available on both Apple and Android devices. Be sure to take a photo of your visit and share this with us on social media using the #WarGravesWeek hashtag.
LEARN: Tune in to our Digital Festival and join us as we host live broadcasts from across the United Kingdom. We commemorate more than 300,000 Commonwealth service personnel across the UK, and you can learn more about these casualties and our work to commemorate them from the comfort of your own home. We will be sharing stories, histories, and speaking to the members of our team from around the world who keep the remembrance of our war dead alive.
REMEMBER: Pay tribute to the men and women of the Commonwealth who died serving across the world, by downloading a special War Graves Week tribute to display in your window at home. You can use CWGC’s casualty database search to find any of the men and women we commemorate and download a tribute for the duration of War Graves Week. Or, if you’re looking for a fun way to get the family involved in War Graves Week, download our new children’s activity booklet – with word searches, I Spy and spot the difference, War Graves Week can be fun for the whole family.

Remembrance Day and anniversaries will always have a place in our work, but War Graves Week is an opportunity for communities to connect with their local heritage in a different way; when the days are longer, when the plants are in bloom, and our sites can be seen in a completely different light. Cemeteries are places for the living, and they were designed to be visited in all seasons. So join us this spring and make your own discovery in War Graves Week – a week to remember.

Hello

RBLI are incredibly proud that Tommy Club Ambassador and England Captain Harry Kane has renewed his shirt sponsorship with Leyton Orient for the upcoming 21-22 season and has dedicated it to RBLI’s Tommy Club.

“It’s one of the best shirts in the league for sure”
– Harry Kane

Emblazoned with the club crest, the Leyton Orient Home 2021/22 Shirt is engineered with NB DRY, which helps wick moisture away from the skin to help keep you cool no matter what’s happening on the pitch.

10% of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to Tommy Club.

Funds raised will help provide the vital welfare support and employment opportunities that military veterans need to overcome challenges caused by physical or mental disability and regain their independence.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Did you know it was Mental Health Awareness Week? There’s no doubt that people’s mental health has taken a toll during the pandemic, not just those of us stuck at home, but also front line workers.

For many of us, the challenges will be eased as the Nation comes out of lockdown and heads back to normality very soon. However, for some people, that might not be the end of it.

In 1919, RBLI’s focus laid with treating WW1 soldiers with tuberculosis, but in today’s world, it’s the mental wounds that are more challenging.

Our range of PTSD patches below have been given to us by one our supporters Tim Brown who got together with RBLI beneficiary Paul Sapsford who was suffering from PTSD.

RBLI set Paul on the road to recovery by putting him through a counselling course and helping him back into employment. Together they have helped us raise funds to help others in the same situation and to support veterans in employment.

Every purchase of a PTSD awareness patch not only helps to raise awareness of the condition, but it helps to fund RBLI’s work in helping veterans with the condition adapt to civilian life, and gain employment.

Team Tommy’s Race to Victory Relay

Thank you so much for your support of Team Tommy, Royal British Legion Industries and our veterans, over this VE Day and the Race to Victory challenge.

Together, Team Tommy completed an 868 mile journey and returned home to a triumphant welcome here on the RBLI Village in Aylesford, Kent this past Saturday, VE DAY. We started Tommy’s Race to Victory at our award winning social enterprise, Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Erskine and travelled the length of the country to Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, in Kent whilst meeting some truly inspirational WW2 veterans along the way. It was an incredible journey, often battling difficult conditions, that was only achievable because of the support and kindness of the public and communities we met along the way.

On route, the team stopped at cities and key military locations, presenting specially-made VE Day Tommy figures, made by injured veterans working in RBLI’s factories, to notable members of the local military communities. They have raised over £20,000 during their time on the road and received incredible public support along the way, meeting WW2 veterans, Cadets, community supporters, our fantastic corporate partners and event sponsors. The funds raised will go directly to supporting veterans through RBLI’s wide range of welfare, accommodation and employment support services.
