Wreaths Across America

Thank You

Dear Michael Barbour,

Life always gets a little busy this time of year, but I wanted to take a minute to answer a question I get asked time and time again: “What does Wreaths Across America do for living Veterans?”

It’s a great question, with many answers, and we’re happy to share them with you here as we commit once again to our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.

In remembrance of their brothers and sisters in arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice, we place wreaths on their headstones and say their names out loud so they will never be forgotten.

We honor them with local events throughout the year, and with awareness programs in communities across the country. Our Mobile Education Exhibit brings local communities and our military together with education, stories, and interactive connections.

Through our fundraising program, we help civic and community groups raise funds for their own local veterans programs. Since 2007, Wreaths Across America has given back more than $13 million to local groups through this fundraising structure.

And perhaps most notably, we tell their stories so that the memory of their heroic actions will live on with future generations.

How will you honor the service members in your community this year?  This month, I encourage you to join as as we Remember, Honor, and Teach.

  • Talk to loved ones and family members about the veterans in your community and what it truly means to be a veteran.
  • Support fundraising for a community or civic group in your community. Find a Sponsorship Group to support.
  • Volunteer to honor veterans at a location convenient for you. Find a location near you.
  • Or consider one of the options below to easily sponsor a veteran’s wreath for placement on National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, December 19.

Poppy Campaign 2020

This year’s official Poppy Campaign ran from October 30, 2020 to November 11, 2020. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 Poppy Campaign is much more limited in scope.  The vast majority of our traditional distribution sites are operating remotely and all of the events we would normally be represented at have been cancelled.  So with a few exceptions, most of our poppies this year were mailed to individuals who directly requested them.

To accommodate the virtual nature of so many of our activities in 2020, we launched a “Show Us Your #BayAreaPoppy” campaign that had limited success.  Some of the pictures that we were able to collect from the campaign included…

As the Poppy Chair for our branch, I wanted to get things started

Once again our partners at Augie’s Montreal Deli in Berkeley were one of our main distribution sites (and one of the few open to the public this year).

Our friends at the Canadian Consulate General in San Francisco got involved.

Due to the pandemic, some of our members and ex-pats made their own poppies this year.

One of our members or an ex-pat Canadian made her extra poppies to friends, neighbours, and others who wanted to pop by.

Finally, this poppy was spotted in the Monterey area.

World War II Memorial

Dear Michael,

Today marks Veterans Day, the day in which we honor those who have fought and sacrificed to protect our nation. This Veterans Day is particularly special, because this year we are honoring the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

On September 2, 1945, with the final surrender of Japan, the entire world stopped and recognized the end of WWII. This Veterans Day, take the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history, and learn about the bravery and patriotism of those who served at home and abroad.

You can walk among the solemn granite pillars of the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C., which memorializes all 56 states and territories that stood united in the war effort. The park ensures that you are also reminded of the price we paid for victory by the 4,000 bronze stars, each representing 1,000 Americans that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

At the Pearl Harbor National Memorial on Oahu Island in Hawaii, you can experience 9 historic sites that take you through the Battle of the Pacific. You can learn about this pivotal moment in our history and honor the fallen at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, and imagine the celebration of victory on the USS Missouri, the site of Japan’s final surrender.

However you choose to spend this Veterans Day, we hope that you take the time to remember those we lost and thank our veterans for their service.

Sincerely,

Katherine Chesson
