Barry Pepper narrates Military Moments | D-DAY – Released Today!

RELEASED TODAY!
Military Moments | D-DAY
Narrated by Barry Pepper

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the greatest military operation in history: D-Day. To mark this significant milestone in the lead-up to Remembrance Day, Legion Magazine has collaborated with Emmy-award winning Canadian actor Barry Pepper to present the next video in our award-winning video series – Military Moments | D-DAY.

The video takes us back to the spring of 1944. The Allies could not wait any longer. It was time to roll the dice on the greatest military operation in history. Together, the Allies—British, American, Canadian—would land on five beaches on France’s Normandy coast in the early hours of June 6—D-Day. Often overshadowed by our American and British bretheren, the video highlights Canada’s triumph and sacrifice at Juno Beach.

There are few artists today who can lend insight into the sacrifices made at D-Day like Pepper. He starred as U.S. Private Daniel Jackson, a sniper, in Steven Spielberg’s 1998 epic war film Saving Private Ryan alongside co-stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. In the years after, Pepper went on to star in feature war films like We Were Soldiers (2002) and Flags of our Fathers (2006), and this year in The Painted Bird which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September.

For four years now, Legion Magazine has collaborated with notable Canadians in sharing the history of our home and native land with our web series: Military Moments. These educational videos have featured a stellar roster of Canadians such as Dan Aykroyd, William Shatner, Mike Myers, Alex Trebek, David Suzuki, Gordon Pinsent, The Honourable Mayann Francis, Linden MacIntyre, Alan Doyle and the late Leonard Cohen. Military Moments is available to watch free to the public on our YouTube Channel.

NOVEMBER 2019     MMA EVENT CALENDAR

This Month

Those of you both in and out of California are surely aware of the devastating fires and blackouts throughout the state in the last month.  The Marines’ Memorial continues to support those displaced from their homes as best we can, whether housing them at the Club & Hotel at a subsidized rate, or assisting them in finding another hotel with availability.

Although our “Aid & Assist” fund has a primary support focus for our Active Duty service members, this program also allows us to offer our members a deeply discounted rate during tragedies like wildfires. Thank you for helping us to support fellow Veterans and active military with your generosity.

Narrow Path to a New NAFTA:
Will USMCA Pass in 2019, 2020, or Never?
The United States Mexico Canada Agreement was negotiated before the 2018 Mexican elections, then approved by the Mexican Congress. In 2019 Canadians went to the polls and re-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau whose Liberals are credited with managing relations with Washington and salvaging Canada’s market access to the United States and Mexico. Now, as the US Congress considers when to start legislative approval, will US elections in 2020 determine the fate of the USMCA? Johns Hopkins University’s Christopher Sands, Senior Research Professor and Director of the Hopkins Center for Canadian Studies at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington offers a perspective on what is new in the agreement and what it’s political prospects are as a third national election looms.

Catching Up With Dr. Shanahan
When reflecting on his experience at Cal, former Canadian Studies Hildebrand Fellow, Brendan Shanahan, recalls the unique and interdisciplinary atmosphere that the University provides. Dr. Shanahan received his PhD in U.S. History from UC Berkeley in 2018, and this spring was awarded the Immigration and Ethnic History Society’s annual Outstanding Dissertation Award for his dissertation, “Making Modern American Citizenship: Citizens, Aliens, and Rights.” Following this award and the birth of his first child, Dr. Shanahan began a postdoc position at Yale University with the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and the Center for the Study of Representative Institutions. Dr. Shanahan explains his current research focuses on “legal, political, and popular disputes over the weight, meaning, and limits of (exclusive) American ‘citizenship rights’ from the late-19th to mid-20th century vis-à-vis the rights of noncitizens in the United States.” In addition to revising his award-winning dissertation for publication and working on several “spin-off” projects, Dr. Shanahan teaches upper-level seminars in immigration history and political and policy histories. This upcoming spring he is looking forward to teaching a course in comparative U.S-Canada political development. In September, the Canadian Studies Program caught up with Dr. Shanahan to hear about his current work and his experiences at Cal. Click here to read the full article.

Hidden History of the Poppy

Amid the blasting bombs, lifeless bodies, and muddy trenches of the Great War, bright red poppies flourished in Flanders Fields, Belgium. This sight inspired a poem that moved the British Empire. Now, each Remembrance Day, many people wear the red flower to honour those who died at war. Share with your students how the poppy became an enduring symbol.

A Bear in War

When Lawrence Rogers was fighting overseas during the First World War, he exchanged hundreds of letters with his family back home. As the war progressed, his daughter decided that her dad needed some extra protection, so she sent her beloved stuffed bear “Teddy.” A Bear in War shares Teddy’s remarkable journey. This book is a gentle introduction to war, to Remembrance Day, and to the honour of those who have served their countries. Learn more

Canada’s History Archive featuring The Beaver

Please note: Some items featured in our newsletters and social media will include links to the Canada’s History Archive. The Beaver magazine was founded, and for decades was published, during eras shaped by colonialism. Concepts such as racial, cultural, or gender equality were rarely, if ever, considered by the magazine or its contributors. In earlier issues, readers will find comments and terms now considered to be derogatory. Canada’s History Society cautions readers to explore the archive using historical thinking concepts — not only analyzing the content but asking questions of who shaped the content and why.
