Marines' Memorial Presents

Check out our latest video, featuring Lt Col Jeff Tice, USAF (Ret) and his presentation,

“A Guest of Saddam: 46 Days as a Prisoner of War”

In January 1991, on the second day of Desert Storm’s “Shock & Awe” campaign, Lt Col Jeff Tice’s F-16 was hit by an Iraqi surface to air missile.  He would become one of 23 U.S. prisoners of war from that conflict.

We were incredibly grateful to host Lt Col Tice at Marines’ Memorial in September as our first in-person speaker of 2021!  Click the link below to hear his personal account of the 46 days he was in captivity as a “Guest of Saddam.”

Lt Col Jeff Tice, USAF (Ret)

About the Speaker:

Lt Col Jeff Tice retired from the US Air Force in 1999 after serving 22 years on active duty as a fighter pilot. He amassed over 3,000 hours of flight time in F-111, F-5 and F-16 jets. He served in combat as a Flight Commander and Assistant Operations Officer during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. After retirement from the USAF, he flew as a Commercial Airline Pilot for American Airlines in the MD-80, Boeing 737, 757, 767 aircraft on both domestic and international routes. Lieutenant Colonel Tice retired from American Airlines in 2012. He currently volunteers for several nationwide military-related charities.

About the Moderator:

A New Jersey native, Doug Porter graduated from Cornell University in 1978.  He then received his commission in the US Navy and entered flight school.  Doug accumulated 2000+ hours in carrier-based jets over the next seven years and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.

Upon leaving the military in 1985, Doug joined Leo Burnett Advertising.  He served in a number of roles during his 19 years there, including Executive Vice President and Worldwide Management Director.  In 2004, Doug joined Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana as the CEO.  After retiring from RMHC in 2015, Doug became a Team Leader in the Sports Clips system, and currently operates 5 franchise stores in the San Diego Area.  He sits on several non-profit boards, including Marines’ Memorial Association.

OCTOBER 2021: REMEMBER

Last Sunday, we recognized National Gold Star Mother’s Day, which has existed since 1936 to remind Americans of the sacrifices endured by the families of fallen service members. At Marines’ Memorial, we think about these unsung heroes every day!

Since 2005, our annual Gold Star Parents Honor and Remembrance event has offered a safe, compassionate environment for families to remember, celebrate and mourn their fallen sons and daughters alongside others who understand their pain.

We are so excited to be planning the 16th annual event, and while we’re still determining the details, there’s one thing we know for sure: we plan to offer Gold Star families the same community as past years and we can’t do it without your support! Please GIVE TODAY to help us honor the sacrifice made by our Gold Star parents. (Donations of $1000 or more will be acknowledged in our Crossroads of the Corps magazine.)

Also of note for October:

> HAPPY 246th BIRTHDAY to the US Navy!

> PLEASE BE PREPARED: The San Francisco Department of Public Health requires us to verify full vaccination status of all event attendees, as well as those wishing to use our Club’s bar, restaurant, and fitness center. We appreciate your understanding.

75 Years in the Making: Tribute Memorial Wall

An item from a fellow veterans organizations in the Bay Area.

Marines' Memorial: 75 Years in the Making

Our 75th Anniversary series has highlighted the initial reason for founding Marines’ Memorial– to stand as a Living Memorial to the men and women who have served our great Country. We have seen many meaningful exhibits over the past 75 years, and our Tribute Memorial Wall is one of the most moving. This past month, more than ever, has reminded us all of the sacrifices our military service members make each and every day.

Tribute Memorial Wall

To uphold our critical mission to Educate, Commemorate, and Serve, in March of 2006, the Board of Directors approved the construction of the “Tribute Memorial Wall” at the Marines’ Memorial Club to pay proper tribute to those warriors lost in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a project inspired by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

On May 27, 2006, shortly after the creation of our Gold Star Parents program, the once simple lobby waiting area on the 10th Floor Mezzanine (10M) at 609 Sutter Street transformed to the most poignant element of our Living Memorial. Since its dedication, the Tribute Memorial Wall has been updated each year to include the names of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives starting in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and continuing through Operation Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel. By the end of 2021, each and every name lost in those Operations will be etched in marble, including the 13 souls tragically lost at the end of last month.

A tour through 10M

The Tribute Memorial Wall continues to stand to commemorate their lives at the Club during our annual Gold Star Parents Honor and Remembrance Event and each day in between.

We invite you to pay tribute to these men and women next time you are at the Club by visiting 10M.  Here you can honor the names emboldened on the black bricks…each brick holding the name of someone who deserves to be remembered.

Today We Remember

An item from a fellow veterans organization in the Bay Area.

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.” —George W. Bush

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the Terror Attacks of September 11, 2001.

This morning, and every day, we remember the many souls who were lost on 9/11. We remember the airline passengers traveling in each of the 4 aircrafts, the men and women innocently going about their morning routine in the World Trade Center, the 412 first responders who lost their lives through heroic acts, and those who have succumbed to the repercussions in the two decades since.

The photo above shows not only the unforgettable image of the Twin Towers, but also a rescue truck with 6 firefighters from FDNY’s Ladder 118 headed in to help.  All 6 of those men perished that day.  20 years later, we remain humbled by their bravery.

One of the worst days in our history saw some of the most courageous acts in our history. Images from that day ignite an array of emotions: grief, disbelief, anguish… but ultimately, as we remember those lost on 9/11, we feel a renewed sense of unity.

SEPTEMBER 2021: HONOR

Normally at the start of every month, we send you updates of what’s going on at the Marines’ Memorial. IN LIGHT OF THE DEVASTATING LOSSES IN KABUL LAST WEEK, we are instead using this space to honor the 13 service members killed while serving our Country. We also want to acknowledge the incredible ongoing sacrifices of all the young men and women who are currently serving in harm’s way.
