Introducing Leading from the Front

Our Marines’ Memorial Club might be a bit quieter these days, but our tradition of celebrating the honor, courage and leadership of our military continues. The house is still standing strong, but it’s not a home without you and our signature programs that highlight these traditions. Join us for a virtual return to Marines’ Memorial with our new series, “Leading from the Front.” We’re looking forward to seeing you here in person in the near future.

Right now, many of us are looking towards our military and civilian leaders for strength and inspiration. Marines’ Memorial is dedicated to doing our part to constructively engage in conversations with difference-makers consistent with our values and our mission to honor the legacy of military service.

Our new program, “Leading from the Front,” is a digital series that will take a look at timeless leadership lessons learned. Our series launch is an interview with Sandy Alderson, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret), former NY Mets General Manager and current Special Advisor to the Oakland Athletics. In the interview, Sandy talks about his careers in the Corps and in baseball, and gives his frank thoughts on the leadership issues facing Major League Baseball’s decision on when and how to play ball again.

Leading from the Front

We hope you enjoy this first video in the series and find that it transports you back to your Club, even for a few moments.  Please share this opportunity with those who might be interested in participating in our 70-year-old tradition.

This video was made possible due to the generous support of our members and donors.  We would like to thank Mr. Kevin O’Brien for his recent contribution kick-starting this effort.  If you would like to support this series, please consider making a donation to help us produce more of these special presentations. Keep an eye out for our next installment of “Leading from the Front.”

Remembering D-Day

D-Day

76 years ago today…

On June 6, 1944, D-Day, some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along the coast of France’s Normandy region. There would be eleven more months of hard fighting in Europe before the Nazis were defeated, but the D-Day invasion gave the Allies the success they needed to start that fight.

Today we commemorate the estimated 4,414 Allied soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and coast guardsmen who died on D-Day.  We remember the men who risked their lives, not to conquer, but to liberate.

In 2019, Marines’ Memorial celebrated the 75th Anniversary of D-Day by showcasing three speakers, Brigadier (Retd.) Roderick Macdonald MBE, Dr. Seth Givens, and Mr. Phil Gioia, who retold first-hand accounts of June 6th both from the Allied and German perspectives.  If you have not seen it, or wish to watch it again, you can find the video on MarinesMemorial.org or on our YouTube page.

“In all of the far-flung operations of our Armed Forces, the toughest job has been performed by the average, easy-going, hard-fighting young American who carries the weight of battle on his own young shoulders. It is to him that we and all future generations must pay grateful tribute.”
-Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Dear Members and Supporters of Marines’ Memorial,

The Marines’ Memorial Association and Foundation exists to commemorate and honor the service and sacrifices of that diverse group of men and women who have selflessly supported and defended our Constitution, freedoms and our way of life. Recent events have caused us to search our conscience and question whether we are all treated fairly, equally and with the respect we deserve in the eyes of not only the law, but in our society as a whole. Marines’ Memorial is committed to actively engaging in constructive conversations and actions to ensure inclusivity, fairness and equality for all, a cornerstone of our values and mission of honoring the legacy of all military service. We recognize that as a nation we need to pause, put our differences aside, have the difficult conversations and seek to understand other perspectives. Together we will fight against racism, hate, inequality and violence to achieve what our forefathers envisioned: liberty and justice for all.

Sincerely, and Semper Fidelis,

Rick Hartnack

New Members: Another Great Idea for Gift Certificates

GiftCertificate.jpg

At the beginning of March, we launched our 2020 Membership Drive, with a goal of 250 new members by 30 June. While many things have changed, one has not: the outstanding longterm value of a Marines’ Memorial membership. Consider helping a veteran you know to make the decision to join by gifting them their first year of membership! Gift certificates are available now by phone, and an online purchase option is coming soon.

Buying a gift certificate for a Hotel Stay in the future is also a great way to feed your optimism for better times ahead. Likewise for booking a future hotel stay. We understand the situation is fluid and we will be flexible with any needed reservation changes.

ADAPT AND OVERCOME - Image of marine saluting
Dear Michael Barbour,
Around Memorial Day, we’d normally be asking for your support to help us honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and keep their names alive for generations to come.
Well, things are certainly not “normal,” but we won’t let this challenging situation get the better of us.
In years past, many of you have made it a tradition to contribute to the Marines’ Memorial on Memorial Day. Though this year may be more difficult, there’s never been a better time to renew your commitment to our mission — to Commemorate, Educate and Serve our past and present heroes. You are absolutely vital to this mission.
Commemorate
In order to be “a tribute to those who have gone before” — a commitment we made back in 1946 — we need our most loyal supporters. We are doing everything we can to keep the Living Memorial going, but it takes ongoing support to ensure that the memories of our fallen service members will be protected in the future.
Educate
As one of the last military bastions in the Bay Area, our duty to educate the future is more important than ever. We have so many incredible events and commemorations planned for the upcoming year, and your continued support will help us return to service as quickly as possible.
Serve
Taking care of our own, both service members and our team, has always been at the forefront of what we do. Our service members and their families all across our great Nation are working around the clock to keep us safe and secure during this hard time. We want to be there for them when these challenging times pass.
This Memorial Day, I’m asking you to dig a bit deeper if possible, to help us ensure that we can continue to honor our fallen heroes and serve those putting their lives on the line for us.
Preserve The Legacy
Gratefully and Semper Fidelis,
Jan C. Huly
Lieutenant General, USMC (Ret)
President and CEO
P.S. Your ongoing support keeps alive the stories of our fallen heroes, and fuels programs that make a difference in the lives of veterans and their survivors. Will you please invest in our future by giving this Memorial Day?
If your giving is restricted to 501(c)3 organizations, please consider a gift to Marines’ Memorial Foundation, which supports all programs of the Marines’ Memorial Association. Please contact the Marines’ Memorial Development Department at development@marinesmemorial.org for more information.
