With the Poppy Campaign fast approaching, there will be countless ways you can give back to Canada’s Veterans. Whether you volunteer, donate to the Campaign or raise awareness about Veterans’ needs, there’s something everyone can contribute this fall.

How the Poppy Fund is changing lives for Veterans with PTSD
Since 2015, Brenda Boomhouer’s Vet to Vet has helped dozens of Veterans annually who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. Through weekends of camaraderie, fishing and healing, the project brings Veterans and their families together to share their experiences and discuss coping strategies with one another to help them feel less alone.
Originally funded through selling cookies, Vet to Vet is now fully funded by multiple Royal Canadian Legion Branches through the Poppy Campaign. Veterans who attend have no costs associated with attending, all their meals are free, lodging is free, they are provided with all the fishing rods, tackle, hats, t‑shirts, a welcome bag of goodies, and transportation is provided to those who need it.

Sharing the love for some of our Legion volunteers
We love to hear from members like you! Here are some messages we’ve received recently from members celebrating their fellow Legionnaires.
“Our secretary for our branch Auclair 121 in Otterburn Park, Québec is invaluable. Debbie Hanney’s generous time contributed to our legion work is incredible. From the regular responsibilities of minute taking to her many lists for all our activities. She is the list master. Her spirits are uplifting and we always appreciate her enthusiasm. Our legion would not function like a well oiled machine it is if it wasn’t for her. Thank you Debbie for everything you do!”
From all of us, thank you Debbie!
“As a NEW member, I would like to give a ‘shout out’ to the wonderful staff and volunteers @ our local Branch 129 in Haliburton. Mike has been working hard to offer a variety of musical events – many genres offer a little something for any age. Great homemade food is made by Cheryl with a smile as she’s serving it up. If things get busy, Della is ready to help. Cheryl did some gardening planting this year to spruce things up outside. I know there are many volunteers who are there to give a hand when needed; I may not know your names, but THANK YOU – you are appreciated. Many hands make light work and this all goes to support our Veterans. Thank you Branch 129 and keep up the good work.”
Thank you, Mike, Cheryl, Della and all the staff and volunteers at Branch 129!

Musk war manoeuvres raise concerns over tech giants’ power

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren is calling for an investigation after a biography of tech entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed he foiled a 2022 Ukrainian military offensive by limiting critical access to his Starlink satellite network.

“Congress needs to investigate what’s happened here, and whether we have adequate tools to make sure foreign policy is conducted by the government and not by one billionaire,” the Massachusetts Democrat said on Sept. 11, 2023.

Saying sorry to Japanese Canadians

STORY BY PAIGE JASMINE GILMAR

Many who appreciated the social justice tendencies of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau thought he had turned on them on April 2, 1984, when NDP MP Lynn McDonald prompted him for his opinion on redressing Japanese Canadians for being interned during the Second World War.

“I do not see that there is much to gain by trying to apologize for acts of our great grandfathers and their great-grandfathers,” Trudeau told McDonald in the House of Commons. “I do not believe in attempting to rewrite history in this way.”

Revisiting historic actions in such a fashion was a new concept, so expressing remorse for the internment of Japanese Canadian was a big deal. It would set a precedent for others who have historically encountered similar treatment by the government.

Free Veterans’ Week learning materials and other great remembrance resources! / Ressources gratuites de la Semaine des vétérans et autres ressources du Souvenir!

An item from Veterans Affairs Canada.

Le texte en français suit…

Dear educators,

A new school year is beginning and that means it is time again for Veterans Affairs Canada to share some great, free learning resources to help engage young people in remembrance. Here are some of the learning materials and activities on tap for this fall:

2023 Veterans’ Week learning materials

Our Veterans’ Week learning materials have been revised for 2023 and are now available for order. Get your free class packs of the Take Time to Remember activity booklet (ages 5-7), Tales of Animals in War newspaper (ages 5-11) or the Canada Remembers Times newspaper (ages 12-18). Our popular cardsbookmarks and posters are also back, along with our on-line Veterans’ Week teacher’s guide. These resources are available in both print and digital formats. Explore them today!

Help us name our special new sheep character

Every year, a herd of up to 500 sheep keep the grass short on the preserved battlefields at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. Next year, one of our Vimy sheep will join the Remembrance Club animal characters to tell students across Canada about memorials in our communities and around the world. But our new sheep needs a name—and we need YOUR help! Visit our website with your students to learn about our new wooly friend. Read and hear our list of name choices in English, French and indigenous languages. Then, take a vote in your classroom and email the results to us at education@veterans.gc.ca!

Service in Canada

Our service members have always performed many important duties here at home. This year marks the 25th anniversaries of the 1998 Ice Storm and the crash of Swissair Flight 111 – events that saw the Canadian Armed Forces quickly step up to help in the aftermath of disasters. Learn more about our military’s domestic efforts on our website.

Other remarkable remembrance resources

Veterans Affairs Canada supports educational initiatives that foster knowledge of our country’s military efforts and those who have served in uniform. Check out our new partners page for information on some of these remarkable projects, like the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association’s PK75: A Peacekeeping Anthology which explores the personal experiences of Canadian peacekeepers through the individual stories and photos of more than 100 Veterans.
