JANUARY 2022: GRATITUDE

Happy New Year! May 2022 bring you good health, good fortune, and great hope for brighter days ahead. We look forward to seeing you here at the Club soon!

The continued generosity of our members and patriotic supporters through 2021 helped us stay focused on every aspect of our mission. We were able to welcome back more staff, send hundreds of care packages, maintain and upgrade our beloved Club building, and present some wonderful events. THANK YOU!

Won’t you help us continue the momentum we’ve built together with a Recurring Gift to the Marines’ Memorial? Even $10, $20 or $30 a month makes a big difference at the end of the year!

Also of note for January:

> MMA Membership and Development offices will be closed on Monday 3 January for the New Year holiday.

> PLEASE BE PREPARED: The San Francisco Department of Public Health requires us to verify full vaccination status of all event attendees, as well as those wishing to use our Club’s bar, restaurant, and fitness center. We appreciate your understanding.

THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE!

Thank you for understanding if some of our communications to you seem to be arriving later than usual. The postal service slowdowns, along with other disruptions, may be causing delays outside of our control. We are doing everything we can to keep things moving.

Please know how important you and your ongoing support are to MMAF and our mission.

MEET THE AUTHOR – 20 JANUARY: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Angel Fire – War, Remembrance, and an American Tragedy

Join us as Steven Trout tells the story of Marine Lieutenant David Westphall, who was killed near Con Thien on May 22, 1968, and of his family’s struggle to create and maintain a unique memorial chapel dedicated to the memory of all Americans lost in the Vietnam War and to the cause of world peace.

Dr. Trout was inspired to undertake this project after discovering the memorial at Angel Fire in 2011.

JOHN BOYKO
The Devil’s Trick: How Canada Fought the Vietnam War

January 12th at 7:00pm ET

The webinar is FREE on Zoom.

Registration is required. Click HERE.

Through the lens of six remarkable people, some well-known, and others obscure, John Boyko will recount Canada’s often-overlooked involvement in the Vietnam War that began before the Americanization of that slow-motion tragedy and lasted long after the Americans left. Canada was a perhaps naive peacemaker, combatant, a cynical provider of weaponry, and a sanctuary. In uncovering Canada’s complex involvement in the Vietnam War, the many secrets and often forgotten ways that Canada not only fought the war but was shaped by its lessons and lies will be revealed.

December 1946: A season of hope

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

Seventy-five years ago, the lights of Christmas 1946 twinkled and danced across Canada and throughout the Western world as they had for no other Yuletide celebration in what must have seemed, to many, an eternity.

Loved ones, families and friends had a lot to celebrate. The war was over, with any luck the boys were home, and 8.2 million babies had already started arriving in what would become known as the postwar baby boom. It lasted two decades.

Our man in Angola

Our man in Angola

Story by Sharon Adams

Angola, a country of some 32 million people along the southwest coast of Africa, endured centuries as a colony of Portugal followed by long years of war to gain independence, then long years of civil war.

At the end of the 1980s, the country was politically divided; the government was supported by the Soviet Union, assisted by Cuban forces, but UNITA (the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) controlled large swaths of the country, with aid from South Africa and the United States.
