Thank you for all that you do
Every November, Legion Branches and members across Canada come together to support a common and crucial cause: the Poppy Campaign. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all involved for their work and commitment over this period of Remembrance. Whether you’ve helped organize a local Remembrance Day ceremony, distributed Poppies, or gathered donations in your neighbourhoods, your dedication has made a difference in the lives of Canada’s Veterans. Thank you.

Queen Elizabeth II commemorative pin
As a commitment to preserve the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Supply Department has created a lapel pin as a visible representation of our gratitude for her unwavering service. The pin may be worn on the Legion uniform until January 31, 2023. This pin replaces the Platinum Jubilee pin, and is worn on the right side lapel, to the left of the Support Our Troops pin. The commemorative pin should not be worn with the Platinum Jubilee pin.

Service dogs for those who served
In August 2018, the Legion’s Ontario Provincial Command partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) to launch Operation Service Dog, with the goal to pair as many injured Veterans as feasible with trained Service Dogs. In the past 12 months alone, WWC is estimating the pairing and placement of 25 Service Dogs with Veterans in Ontario, with a further 18 in training – an increase from 17 dogs paired and placed the previous 12 months, demonstrating that this initiative is producing results!

Thousands of CAF members eligible for compensation for drinking contaminated water
Former residents of CFB Valcartier may be eligible for financial compensation due to a ruling regarding contaminated water sources between 1995 and 2006.
In 2012, the Quebec Superior Court ruled that the Department of National Defense (DND), SNC-Lavalin and General Dynamics should pay millions of dollars to those who lived on-base or in the neighbouring municipality of Shannon, Quebec, where water was contaminated with the dangerous carcinogenic trichloroethylene.
It’s estimated that thousands of former CFB Valcartier residents may be entitled to compensation, which could total hundreds of thousands of dollars. Any person who believes they are eligible should visit actioncollectiveshannon.ca for more information.
The deadline to apply is January 2023.

2021 census data on Veterans
The 2021 census data on Canadian serving military members and Veterans was recently released. The document contains both demographic and geographic information which is extremely insightful. Read the report.
One key takeaway from the report is the distribution of age. Currently serving CAF were younger on average than the employed labour force (36.2 years versus 41.9 years of age). Additionally, one-third of Veterans are age 25 to 54. These are audiences Branches are trying to attract, for support, for camaraderie, and for membership. These are the audiences Branches will pass the torch to ensure the longevity of the Legion.
Consider these ideas when developing programs, policies, activities and communication tactics for younger demographics:

  1. Meet this younger audience where they are. Invest in a website and have a presence on social media. Share engaging content like videos, stories and photos of your Branch in action.
  2. Get their input! Do a short survey or pull together a small focus group to ask these members what they want or need, what you’re doing well, and what you could do better.
  3. Review your Branch policies and procedures. Some Branches have modified their initiation process or adapted their hat policy to make their Branch more comfortable for new members.
  4. Offer flexible volunteer opportunities. Busy members are more likely to get involved in intermittent, fun, short-term roles that interest them.
  5. Offer activities that appeal to younger audiences. Bring in new bands or comedy entertainment. Try new member sports like euchre tournaments. Offer unique food and drink items on your menu.

Has your Branch been successful in attracting younger members? Let us know how. Email us at marketing@legion.ca.

Honouring Indigenous History Month
The Legion helped mark National Indigenous History Month by sharing how Indigenous traditions exist within the organization today, how they are shaping the future, and how a historic law affected Aboriginal comrades and the Legion.
“…we recognize that complete societal and organizational healing and change can take a long time and there is a lot of work to do,” says Legion Dominion President Bruce Julian. “I can assure you that our Indigenous comrades and their customs form an integral part of our organization’s fabric today, and we are constantly looking at what we can do better to recognize their history and support a positive future.”

The Poppy Trademark.
Poppy Trademark – Cannot be used in food products
Did you know… the Remembrance Poppy cannot be used on edible products. Items such as cookies or cakes designed with a Poppy to honour Veterans are not an approved use, as the sacred Poppy should never be consumed.
See the attached educational flyer for Branches that highlights important information about the Poppy trademark, and requirements for use.

Resources and tips to support your Membership Chair
2023 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL STICKERS
2023 stickers will be delivered to Branches the last week of August for all members who have renewed for 2022 by the end of July 2022. Please ensure your 2022 renewals are processed before the end of July.
FALL MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL CAMPAIGN
As we prepare for the busiest time of the year for membership renewals, we encourage you to update, collect and upload member email addresses and phone numbers within the membership website. With this information, we can cost-effectively remind members to renew on your behalf via one of these renewal options:

  • at your local Branch
  • by phone – by contacting member services
  • online – 34% of all Legion members renewed online during 2021 and this number continues to grow during 2022!

This approach can help save local Branches and membership chairs time and money!

Veteran Family Welcome Program eligibility has expanded
Parents, guardians, spouses and adult children of serving, retired or passed CAF and RCMP members who have not yet joined the Legion can now receive a first free year of membership at the Legion.
Encourage Veterans and eligible family who have not yet joined to register today.

PR Tip of the Month
Remember the Legion is apolitical
When approached by media or others to comment on political matters or participate in petitions, remind them the Legion is apolitical. We work behind the scenes and respectfully advocate with all governments, through all PR channels, for changes to benefit Veterans and their families.
