Thank you to Branches and National Corporate Supporters of the Poppy Campaign Thank you to all Branches for working with local and national corporate supporters to bring Poppies to every corner of your communities! In addition to the local business relationships initiated by Branches, the 2023 Poppy Campaign had 40 National Corporate Supporters. Branch collaboration with corporate supporters helps ensure Canadians never forget by making Poppies accessible across the country. Corporate contactless and point-of-sale systems have offered a new way for Canadians to donate. We are happy to share that HSBC’s Pay Tribute tap-enabled donation Poppy boxes raised $445,000 and these funds have been distributed back to participating Legion Branches. Since 2020, the Pay Tribute program has generated over $1M for local Branch Poppy Trust Funds. Starbucks’ point-of-sale support also raised $107,820 this year, with all funds distributed back to the corresponding Legion Branches. Since 2022, Dominion Command has supplied Starbucks with its Poppies, reaching over $210K in additional donations to local Branch Poppy Trust Funds — a nearly $250% increase over the previous two years when Branches themselves dropped off Poppies and boxes. Please see the recent amendments and update your copy. Poppy Manual: Amendments  ‣ | Updated manual  ‣ Promote the Veteran Welcome Program Serving and retired Veterans, as well as the spouses, children, parents and guardians of Veterans get their first year of Legion membership free. If you know of an eligible Veteran or family of a Veteran that has not yet joined the Legion, encourage them to register and get to know their Legion at no cost. Did you know over 60% of free memberships renew the following year? Once signed up, these members are encouraged to transfer their membership to their local Branch. Promotional Poster  ‣ | Register Online  ‣ | Registration Form  ‣ Advertise your Branch, District or Command in the 2024 Dominion Convention booklet The 2024 Dominion Convention Local Arrangement Committee is accepting ads for placement in the Convention booklet, which will be distributed to all delegates. The deadline to submit an ad is February 28, 2024. Download submission form  ‣ French Embassy looking for eligible Canadian Veterans for Legion of Honour Do you know a living Canadian Veteran who took part in the liberation of France in 1944, or in the Operation Jubilee (Dieppe Raid) in 1942? He could be eligible for the Legion of Honour, the highest national French distinction founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. Please share with Veterans in your community Researchers at Sinai Health in Toronto, and the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families in Ottawa are looking for Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who experience symptoms of post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As part of a new study, you would participate in a breathing-based meditation program that may help with your symptoms of PTSD. Branch member Terri will be visiting local high schools to educate students on this beautiful painting. On the Saturday, the Branch will unveil a new Branch also will be unveiling a new Afghanistan War Memorial… a project proudly led by the Branch. I hope they take away a sense of responsibility and pride,” says Galt Legion President Yvonne Power. In addition to learning about the importance of the Legion, Remembrance and giving back to the community, the youth volunteers help the Branch by cutting grass, washing dishes and assisting with events. Ritual, Awards and Protocol Manual – View amendments  ‣ Government of Canada reveals design for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan More than 40,000 Canadians in uniform and hundreds of civilians and government officials served in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014. While in Afghanistan, 158 Canadian Armed Forces members, a diplomat, four aid workers, a government contractor and a journalist lost their lives. Thousands of Canadian Armed Forces members and civilians were also injured — physically and psychologically. The National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan will recognize the commitment and sacrifice of the Canadians who served in Afghanistan, and the support provided to them at home by their families, peers and communities. The University is seeking Canadian Armed Forces serving members and Veterans with chronic pain (physical or mental, with >3 months duration) that have used, or are interested in using, medical cannabis for their pain. Participants must be willing to complete a 15-minute online survey to share their medical cannabis self-education needs, preferences and experience. Sunday, September 17 will mark the first official National Legion Week across Canada. Celebrated by some Provincial Commands and their Branches since the 1980s, National Legion Week is designed to educate communities on the good work their local Branch does, reinforce the role the Legion plays in supporting Veterans and attract new members to our organization. Branches are encouraged to share the 30- and 15-second commercials and the 30-second radio spot with local broadcasters to help promote the Legion in your community — download a letter you can send to broadcasters below. Listen and download  ‣ | Download PSA letter  ‣ Reminder: Screen every booking at your Branch Not everyone who requests to book a Branch has the Legion’s values at heart. This is why screening each and every booking request you receive is imperative to our success. Branches cannot be affiliated with anyone promoting discrimination, overthrowing government, or protesting laws or regulations. Read full email  ‣ | Download the Branch Booking Checklist  ‣ Using your Branch logo Every Branch has a branded Legion logo which includes its Branch number and location. Branches are required to use their Branch logo for ALL Branch communications, including but not limited to stationary, marketing and public relations materials, Branch branded products and promotions, and signage. Branches can request the Legion logo but contacting marketing@legion.ca and providing their Branch Command, Branch number and town/city. Branches with an exisiting supply of collateral or signage using an old Legion logo may use that up before reordering with the new logo. The Legion responds to the 2023 federal budget In its 2023 budget, Canada’s federal government committed $156.7 million dollars to help support military and RCMP Veterans. The Legion trusts they will do just that — and in tangible ways. “We are happy to see this proposed spending,” says Bruce Julian, Dominion President. “But it needs to be properly targeted. We would like more clarity on exactly how it will be spent. This funding should go where it’s needed most, and in a way that directly benefits Veterans and clears the backlog.” Read more  ‣ New housing support for CAF troops We are encouraged to hear the Canadian Armed Forces plans to launch a new housing benefit for troops who need it most. The Legion has long been advocating for this sort of program to support those who face high costs of living while on duty in some parts of Canada. The Legion also will be monitoring how changes to the housing benefits may impact those not eligible. Read more  ‣ Look out for scams defrauding seniors The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has provided information and advice to help prevent “emergency” scams which target and defraud seniors — including Veteran seniors. According to police, these crimes are at an all-time high in Canada and can be emotionally and financially devastating. With “emergency scams”, seniors are targeted through phone calls from criminals posing as relatives, claiming their loved one is involved in some emergency (accident, sick, legal etc.) and requires immediate financial help. Branches are encouraged to download the following assets and post or share with members and vulnerable seniors. About emergency scams  ‣ | Download the prevention handout  ‣ Branch Membership Administration Resources and tips to support your Membership Chair + Automated telemarketing renewal calling campaign is underway Canada Direct has started running our automated telemarketing campaign, calling approximately 18,000 non-renewed members using its predictive dialing software. A pre-recorded phone message will remind members to renew their Legion membership. Members can transfer to speak to an Agent and pay directly over the phone with a credit card. If the member is not home, a message will be left encouraging them to renew.
