Mission Matters Newsletter: What we’re planning for this December

A newsletter from the Wreaths Across America organization.

Dear friend of Wreaths Across America,

As October arrives, so do cooler temps (well, in Maine, at least) and the beginning of production for the live, balsam veterans’ wreaths that will be sponsored and placed this December.

We are often asked, why does Wreaths Across America only place live wreaths? The answer is simple, we do not “decorate’ headstones. Through this program and the network of tens of thousands of dedicated volunteers across the country, we are honoring all veterans and active military members by placing live wreaths. Fresh evergreens have been used for centuries as a symbol recognizing honor and as a living tribute renewed annually. We want people to see the tradition as a living memorial to veterans and their families.

Ultimately, the sponsorship and placement of a veteran’s wreath is truly so much more. The veteran’s wreath serves as a catalyst to bring together communities, unite families, create opportunity for fundraising by other nonprofits and civic groups doing good locally, and teach children about the service and sacrifice that gives us our freedom in this country.

To demonstrate the impact of one veteran’s wreath, we’re excited to share the following short video!

This December, we’ll work together to ensure every name is spoken out loud and that every service member laid to rest is remembered.

REMEMBER. HONOR. TEACH.

Dear friend,

As summer nears to a close, and the focus shifts back to school (virtually, in most cases) and the fall, we can’t help but get excited for our favorite time of year, WREATH SEASON!

During this time of year, Wreaths Across America’s thousands of dedicated volunteers really kick up efforts to raise awareness and wreath sponsorships needed to support local efforts in their communities across the country. This year, we already have more than 2,200 participating locations registered to host wreath laying events and ceremonies as part of National Wreaths Across America Day – Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020. The team here is working with local, state and national officials to provide guidance and recommendations to host these events safely. We encourage you to find the location near you that you’d like to support and sign up to volunteer at or sponsor a $15 wreath for that location so that you will receive regular updates about that location’s event plans.

This year, to help build awareness for the more than 4,000 Sponsorship Groups that support the program, we’ll be featuring a “100 Day Countdown to Wreath Day.” During this 100 Day #WAACountdown we’ll highlight a new Sponsorship Group each day who is supporting the mission in their own community and understand their WHY for participating. This campaign will kick off on Saturday, Sept 10, and run through Wreath Day on Saturday, Dec. 19. Tune in to Wreaths Across America Radio’s Morning Show, Monday-Friday, 6-10am ET, to hear from different groups and follow along on social media to see daily features about these amazing volunteers and how you can support their efforts.

If you’ve already sponsored a wreath this year, please consider inviting someone new to the program – all are welcome to help place wreaths and every $15 received honors an American Hero!

REMEMBER. HONOR. TEACH.

Please, join us from wherever you are in the country by standing outside and waving an American flag, starting at 8:46 am ET. Polishing our patriotism. Mission Matters Newsletter from Wreaths Across America.

While 2020 has been an interesting year (to say the least), it’s also been a year of people coming together to help their neighbors. Nationwide, our volunteers have stepped up and pitched in to not only HONOR and REMEMBER our veterans, but to give back to their very own communities.

This past month, Wreaths Across America led by example, by transitioning our annual concert into our first ever Virtual Concert, drawing in support from thousands of Americans. The media
attention surrounding this event was incredible! We had almost 300 stories nationwide, in 42 of the 50 states, which has a positive impact on the mission of Wreaths Across America to REMEMBER, HONOR, and TEACH.

During our virtual concert, Karen Worcester, our Executive Director, declared, “THERE WILL BE A WREATHS DAY THIS YEAR!”

While the Wreaths Across America ceremonies may look a bit different than usual, efforts to honor and remember all our nation’s heroes won’t stop until the mission is complete. Just like our veterans, we will adapt and improvise!

When December 19th rolls around and we’re all standing proud, in unity, to HONOR and REMEMBER our nation’s veterans at each of our Wreaths Across America Day ceremonies, our hearts will be full as we reflect back on this past year that’s helped us grow and change and become even stronger than we ever thought we could become.

Remember. Honor. Teach.

“During our Giving in July Virtual Concert I talked a lot about the need to polish our patriotism. And the more I think about this, the more it resonates with me. During difficult times it can be hard to see the good, and I personally feel that it is what we are experiencing right now in this country. It’s time for people to come together to unite in their communities and find common ground. I hope Wreaths Across America’s mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those that served and their families, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom can be one of these unifiers. I can guarantee you that National Wreaths Across America Day is going to happen this December, so please join us in the mission and get involved in your community today! Let’s work together to polish our patriotism and let it shine.”

#AmericaProud #AmericaStrong.

Tiger Flight 739 Monument Groundbreaking

On Friday, July 17, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held at the site of the monument that will be built this year in honor of the lives lost on March 16, 1962, over the Western Pacific Ocean.  The aircraft was transporting 93 jungle-trained U.S. Army Rangers and 3 South Vietnamese soldiers from Travis Air Force Base in California to Saigon, Vietnam. After refueling in Guam, the flight was en route to the Philippines when communication was lost and it disappeared. All 107 aboard were declared missing and presumed dead. For nearly 60 years, surviving families have received no answers and the names of these young soldiers have yet to be added to the Vietnam Wall in D.C., after years of petitioning Congress to ensure they are remembered.

Wreaths Across America and its founder Morrill Worcester are honored to provide some healing for these families with a new memorial to be located on the tip land amongst the balsam fir trees adorned with replica dog tags of thousands of fallen heroes.

Wreaths Across America’s Mobile Education Exhibit

“Remember, Honor, Teach” is a phrase you’ll likely hear repeated more than a few times across the nation as the Wreaths Across America’s Mobile Education Exhibit (MEE) has been visiting states across the country.
The MEE, contains colorfully illustrated informational panels, a small theater, and is a place where visitors have an opportunity to explore and honor veterans as well as learn more about the organization through videos, interactive connections, and a knowledgeable staff.

Communities are welcoming the MEE with open arms and enthusiastic support, while media attention has been both positive and inspiring. With a little more than a month under our belt back on the road, we have seen about 75 newspaper, radio, TV and on-line articles all geared toward the local communities being visited and the stories of Vietnam Veterans who are being welcomed home (many, for the very first time).
Stefan Brann, the MEE driver and caretaker said “When you see the good that this does, when you see the families of veterans, veterans themselves and how much it means to them, you can’t help but be touched by it, and you just want to be a part of it.”

It is important to note that these visits are all in compliance with CDC Safety Guidelines and also meet, or exceed, any state requirements and/or suggestions. This diligent effort on behalf of the MEE team has helped make this a safe event to attend and a much needed reminder of what Americans can accomplish when we all work together.

On Wednesday, July 1st, we officially begin our month-long celebration of Giving in July!

The entire month of July is dedicated to sharing the Wreaths Across America mission to REMEMBER, HONOR, and TEACH by highlighting those giving back to their local communities. As we kick off #GivingInJuly, we invite you to join us by giving to other like-minded charities, community programs, and civic groups who are contributing to your local community.

This year, we’re especially excited to be hosting a VIRTUAL Giving in July Concert Event LIVE on the Wreaths Across America – Official Facebook Page, on Sunday, July 19th, from 7-10pm EST!

Join us for this LIVE event where you’ll enjoy our featured music artists who embody patriotism, are supportive of our country’s veterans and their families, and who are actively involved in furthering the Wreaths Across America mission to REMEMBER, HONOR, and TEACH. You’ll also hear a touching message from Operation RedWing Lone Survivor, United States Navy SEAL (RET) Marcus Luttrell and his wife, Melanie. In addition, we’ll be highlighting volunteers from all across the country and their stories of giving back to their local communities.

Remember. Honor. Teach.

Help a Sponsorship Group Giving Back in Your Community!

In 2007, Wreaths Across America expanded its annual wreath placement event to enable groups and organizations to support national, state and local participating cemeteries across the country. We established the Group Sponsorship Program to benefit other like-minded charities, community programs and civic groups through the sale of wreath sponsorships for participating locations. Sponsorship Groups that sign up as a $5-back member, receive $5-of-each-$15 wreath sponsorship to be used for their own local programs happening in the community.

Since its start, Wreaths Across America has given back more than $12M to programs across the country through this offering.

We are #AmericaStrong

“In these troubled times, it’s important for us as Americans to look to those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom and emulate their character and courage. Having been given the freedom to agree, disagree and compromise we must come together to build a path to the future for the next generation instilling in them the responsibility to care for that freedom. Together we can and will face these difficult times ahead with renewed commitment to remain, as always, America Strong!”

Remember and Honor This Memorial Day: Wreaths Across America: Mission Matters Newsletter

A newsletter from the Wreaths Across America organization.

Click to view this email online.

This Memorial Day, and always, we REMEMBER, HONOR, and TEACH about those who have served and sacrificed for our freedoms and for the families they left behind.

Now, as many communities around our country cancel traditional plans, it is perhaps more important than ever that we take the time to observe Memorial Day in the spirit it was intended. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is not “the unofficial start of summer” as so many believe, but is a day for remembering all men and women who have died in military service for the United States.

You may be concerned that the sacrifice made by those brave men and women will go unnoticed this year if your community has to cancel Memorial Day observations or limit attendance at ceremonies. That doesn’t have to be the case. Here are some ways you can continue to REMEMBER and HONOR this Memorial Day:

Say Their Names.
When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, we encourage them to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life. This solemn and moving moment is one of the most important aspects of National Wreaths Across America Day. In fact, we encourage our volunteers at every participating location to perform this action for every veteran, even if they do not have a wreath dedicated to each veteran at their location.

This Memorial Day, consider taking a similar moment to honor the fallen veterans in your community by sharing their names or stories. This is a simple action that can easily be performed virtually if you are unable to hold in-person events in your community. Try creating a short video and sharing it on social media or encourage families in your community to contribute photos, names, and stories of the veterans in their lives.

Honor a Loved One Through the Remembrance Tree Program.
Wreaths Across America established the Veteran’s Remembrance Tree Program as another way to remember and honor our veterans. In Columbia Falls, Maine, where the balsam tips are harvested each year to be made into the wreaths that are placed on veteran’s graves, Gold Star Families may participate in the Remembrance Tree Program by finding a tree that will become a living memorial to their loved one and placing a customized dog tag on the trunk of the evergreen tree. These trees are kept in production and their balsam tips are harvested every three years and made into veterans’ wreaths that are placed each December. Participation in this program is FREE and open to all families who have had a loved one in the military.

Give the Gift of Remembrance.
With every $15 veteran’s wreath sponsorship, you have the opportunity to dedicate it “In Memory Of” a friend or loved one who served. In addition to placing the wreaths each December on National Wreaths Across America day, Wreaths Across America hosts a virtual “ Remember Wall” for each participating location. You can post photos, memories and personal messages on these pages as a year-round display of remembrance.

To further honor our veterans this year, we’ll be sharing a selection of the “Remember Wall” messages on the Wreaths Across America Official social media pages over the coming days/weeks. If you’d like to participate, start your sponsorship here or search for the Wreaths Across America location you wish to support.

No matter how you remember and honor this weekend, we hope you do so with gratitude for those who were willing to sacrifice for this country and all who call her home of the free…because of the brave.
